Michelle Obama's 'Daily Show' Appearance: First Lady Discusses President's Past, Joe Biden

First Lady Michelle Obama weighed in on recent revelations about her husband's past drug use on Tuesday, acknowledging that President Obama realized at a young age that he "could do more with his life."

During an appearance on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" to promote her new cookbook, the First Lady was asked by host Jon Stewart about the president's high school and college years. An excerpt released last week from David Maraniss's forthcoming biography of the president contained details about Obama's marijuana use as a teenager. Stewart joked that the stories about the president as a young man resembled the "script of a Cheech and Chong movie."

While the First Lady didn't directly address the claims in Maraniss' book, she did say that her husband underwent a change during his college years.

"By the time he was in college, like so many young people, he realized that he could do more with his life," Obama told Stewart. "He had a mother that was always saying you're so gifted, you're so talented, slap him on the head, 'get yourself together.'"

She continued: "When he lost his father, that was one of those click-in moments. And he really buckled down, he transferred schools, went to Columbia, and thought about how to use his life to the fullest."

Obama also commented on her relationship with Vice President Joe Biden, who Stewart joked was like an uncle who brings guns to family events.

"I love Joe," Obama said. "He's a great vice president and he's a great friend. My kids hang around him and I'm good with it."

Tuesday marked Obama's first appearance on "The Daily Show" since becoming First Lady. Her last stop was in 2008, when she spoke with Stewart in the final month of her husband's presidential campaign.

Turkey expels diplomats as Syria denounces protest

A demonstrator carries a sign reading "Thank you Germany" in front of the Syrian embassy in Berlin Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Governments around the world expelled ambassadors and top Syrian diplomats Tuesday in an unusually coordinated blow to Syria's leaders, after a particularly gruesome massacre in which the United Nations says families, including children, were shot at close range in their homes. The ambassador to Germany, Radwan Loutfi, was given 72 hours to leave Germany on Tuesday. (AP) ? Turkey and Japan expelled Syrian diplomats on Wednesday, joining the U.S. and several other nations in protesting a weekend massacre of more than 100 people in Syria, including women and children.

The move came as Syrian forces bombarded rebel-held areas in the same province where the Houla killings occurred, although no casualties were immediately reported, activists said.

Survivors blamed pro-regime gunmen for at least some of the carnage in Houla as the killings reverberated inside Syria and beyond, further isolating President Bashar Assad and embarrassing his few remaining allies. The Syrian government denied its troops were behind the killings and blamed "armed terrorists."

The U.N.'s top human rights body planned to hold a special session Friday to address the massacre.

Damascus had said it would conclude its own investigation into the Houla deaths by Wednesday but it was not clear if the findings would be made public.

The Houla killings prompted Western nations to expel Syrian diplomats in a coordinated protest, with the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria ordering top Syrian diplomats to leave on Tuesday.

Syria's state-run media on Wednesday denounced the diplomatic expulsions, which began Tuesday with announcements by the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria, as "unprecedented hysteria."

Turkey, Syria's neighbor and a former close ally, joined the coordinated protest on Wednesday. Turkey has been among the most outspoken critics of the Assad regime. It closed its embassy in Damascus in March and withdrew the ambassador. Its consulate in Aleppo remains open.

The Foreign Ministry said it ordered the Syrian charge d'affaires and other diplomats at the Syrian embassy in Ankara to leave the country within 72 hours. The consulate in Istanbul will remain open for consular duties only.

"It is out of the question to remain silent and without any reaction in the face of this action, which amounts to a crime against humanity," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. "This grave crime against humanity by those who have attempted a massacre of civilians cannot go unpunished."

Japan also ordered the Syrian ambassador in Tokyo to leave the country because of concerns about violence against civilians. Japan's foreign minister, Koichiro Genba, said his country was not, however, breaking off diplomatic ties with Syria.

The announcements came a day after the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria ordered top Syrian diplomats to leave.

U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan met with Assad on Tuesday in Damascus to try to salvage what was left of his peace plan, which since being brokered six weeks ago has failed to stop any of the violence on the ground.

The Al-Baath daily, the mouthpiece of Assad's Baath Party, said Syria won't be intimidated by such "violent rhythms" and would remain standing in front of such "ugly, bloody and dramatic shows." It added that "Syria will not tremble as they think."

The government's Al-Thawra newspaper also blasted the Western decision, calling it an "escalation that aims to besiege Annan's plan and enflame a civil war."

Tensions have escalated as more information emerges about the May 25 killings in Houla.

The U.N.'s human rights office said most of the 108 victims were shot execution-style at close range, with fewer than 20 people cut down by regime shelling.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said there are strong suspicions that pro-Assad fighters were responsible for some of the killings, casting doubt on allegations that "third elements" ? or outside forces ? were involved, although he did not rule it out.

On Sunday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said a committee comprising the ministries of justice, defense and interior was set up to investigate the massacre and would have the job done within three days.

Meanwhile, activists said Syrian troops shelled restive suburbs of Damascus and rebel-held areas in the central city of Homs on Wednesday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said at least five people were killed in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Both groups had no details about casualties in Homs, which is the provincial capital of the province that includes Houla.

(AP Photo/Google)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google will try to win more converts to a computer operating system revolving around its popular Chrome Web browser with a new wave of lightweight laptops built by Samsung Electronics.

Tuesday's release of the next-generation Chromebooks will give Google and Samsung another opportunity to persuade consumers and businesses to buy an unconventional computer instead of machines running on familiar software by industry pioneers Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc.

Unlike most computers, Google's Chromebooks don't have a hard drive. They function like terminals dependent on an Internet connection. The laptops come with 16 gigabytes of flash memory ? the kind found in smartphones, tablet computers and some iPods. Two USB ports allow external hard drives and other devices to be plugged into the machines.

Chromebooks haven't made much of a dent in the market since their debut a year ago. In that time, more people have been embracing Apple's iPad and other tablet computers ? a factor that has contributed to a slowdown in sales of personal computers.

The cool reception to Chromebooks has raised questions about whether Google misjudged the demand for computers designed to quickly connect to its dominant Internet search engine and ever-expanding stable of other online services, ranging from email to a recently introduced file-storage system called Drive.

"The Chromebooks have had less to offer than tablets, so they haven't been that interesting to consumers," said Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa.

Google says it always intended to take things slowly with the Chromebooks to give its engineers time to understand the shortcomings of the machines and make the necessary improvements.

"This release is a big step in the journey to bringing (Chromebooks) to the mainstream," said Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president of Chrome and apps.

The upgraded laptop, called "Series 5 550," is supposed to run two-and-half times faster than the original machines, and boasts higher-definition video. Google also added features that will enable users to edit documents offline, read more content created in widely used Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel, and retrieve material from another computer at home or an office. More emphasis is being placed on Chrome's Web store, which features more than 50,000 applications.

The price: $449 for models that only connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi and $549 for a machine that connects on a 3G network. Samsung's original Chromebooks started out with prices ranging from $429 to $499. Like the original Chromebooks, the next-generation machines feature a 12.1-inch screen display and run on an Intel processor.

Google Inc. and Samsung also are introducing a "Chromebox" that can be plugged into a display monitor to create the equivalent of desktop computer. The box will sell for $329.

The latest Chromebook and new Chromebox will be available online only, beginning in the U.S. on Tuesday, followed by a Wednesday release in the United Kingdom. The products will go on sale in brick-and-mortar stores for the first time in still-to-be-determined Best Buy locations next month.

The expansion beyond Internet-only sales signals Google's determination to attract a mass audience to its Chromebooks, just as it's done with smartphones running on its Android software. More than 300 million mobile devices have been activated on Android since the software's 2008 release.

Without providing specifics, Pichai said several other computer manufacturers will release Chromebooks later this year. Google plans to back the expanded line of Chromebooks with a marketing blitz during the holiday shopping season in November and December.

One reason Google is confident Chromebooks will eventually catch on is because the Chrome Web browser has attracted so many fans in less than four years on the market. The company says more than 200 million people worldwide currently are using the Chrome browser.

Like other laptop and desktop computers, the Chromebooks will have to contend with the accelerating shift to the iPad and other tablets. The iPad 2, an older version of Apple's tablet line, sells for as little as $399, undercutting the new Chromebook. Other low-cost tablets are expected to hit the market later this year. One of them might even be made by Motorola Mobility, a device maker that Google bought for $12.5 billion earlier this month. Google so far hasn't commented on Motorola's future plans for the tablet market.

The new Chromebooks also are hitting the market at a time when some prospective computer buyers may be delaying purchases until they can check out machines running on Windows 8, a makeover of Microsoft's operating system that is expected to be released in September or October. Microsoft designed Windows 8 so it can be controlled through touch as well as keyboards. That versatility is expected to inspire the creation of hybrid machines that are part laptop, part tablet.

Google shares added $2.81 Tuesday to close at $594.34.

The Miami-based agency said early Friday the storm was packing sustained winds of 115 mph making it a Category 3 storm and was centered about 170 miles (274 kilometers) southwest of Manzanillo and moving north-northeast at 10 mph (17 kph). (AP Photo/NASA)

(AP) ? Hurricane Bud lost a little of its sting early Friday, but remained a potent Category 2 storm as it headed toward a string of laid-back beach resorts and small mountain villages on Mexico's Pacific coast south of Puerto Vallarta.

Authorities canceled school in 11 communities expected to be hit by heavy rains in Jalisco state, and emergency workers were preparing emergency shelters, many of which would be located in empty school classrooms.

Heavy rains and 6-foot (2-meter) high waves had already started pelting Melaque, a beach town on the Bahia de Navidad, about an hour's drive east of the sparsely populated stretch of coast where the hurricane's center is expected to come ashore.

Rafael Galvez, the manager of the Hotel Bahia in Melaque, said his staff was preparing to board up windows in preparation for Bud's arrival.

"For me, really, this is my fourth hurricane, I went through Wilma in Cancun," which hit as a Category 4, Galvez said. "This is a little less severe."

Category 2 Hurricane Jova hit the area in October, killing six people and flooding parts of Melaque and neighboring Barra de Navidad.

"There was a lot of flooding in the whole area, and we lost electricity," Galvez recalled. But this week, he said, only seven of his hotel's 26 rooms were occupied, and none of the hotel's guests were planning to leave.

A hurricane warning was up for Mexico's Pacific coast from Manzanillo, east of Melaque, northwestward to Cabo Corrientes. A hurricane watch and tropical storm warning were in effect from Punta San Telmo westward to east of Manzanillo.

Bud had been a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 kph) late Thursday, but it was down to near 110 mph (175 kph) early Friday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Bud was expected to weaken further before hitting the coast late in the day, still at hurricane force.

The storm was centered about 105 miles (170 kilometers) southwest of Manzanillo and moving north-northeast near 8 mph (13 kph).

The Hurricane Center said the storm would likely move a little inland, then make a U-turn and head back out into the Pacific. That development would leave a small section of coast under hurricane and tropical-storm conditions for three days, raising the chance of heavy flooding.

The government of Jalisco state prepared hundreds of cots and dozens of heavy vehicles such as bulldozers that could be needed to move debris.

Officials in Puerto Vallarta said they were in close contact with managers of the hundreds of hotels in the city in case tourists need to move to eight emergency shelters. It said the sea along the city's famous beachfront was calm, but swimming had been temporarily banned as a precaution.

Jalisco state's civil defense office said two shelters had been opened in Cihuatlan, a town just inland from Melaque that was hard hit by flooding from Jova.

The office also said authorities had decided to open a trench to help drain a coastal lagoon near Melaque that was already full and could overflow.

The region is experienced at handling hurricanes, Galvez noted. "The government planning has helped a lot," he noted.

PFT: NFL moves trade deadline back 2 weeks

Cleveland Browns v Baltimore RavensGetty Images

Understandably, players who don?t want to wear leg pads are not reacting favorably to the NFL?s decision that, come 2013, they?ll have to wear leg pads.

?There?ll probably be a lot of fines in 2013,? Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer told Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego.? ?A lot of guys won?t wear them.?

That group includes Jammer.

?It?s dumb,? Jammer said.? ?Ridiculous to me.? I don?t think anybody should be required to wear [them].? I don?t get hit, so I don?t need to worry about pads.? Offensive players should wear them because we hit them, but I don?t think it should be mandatory.

?You play this game because you want to play this game, and the risks you take are the risks you take.? If you don?t want to wear hip pads, knee pads or thigh pads, you shouldn?t have to.? It should be a choice.?

Chargers linebacker Jarret Johnson, who joined the team in March from the Ravens, was more pointed.

?It?s a bunch of guys who never played football before,? Johnson said.? ?You hear it all the time.? They?re saying, ?Why do players always complain about player safety if they?re not going to wear thigh pads?? Well, thigh bruises and knee bruises aren?t ending careers.

?The repetitive amount of hits we take, day in and day out ? this, to me, is a P.R. stunt. . . .? If you get hit in the legs, you?re doing something wrong. You?re either getting cut or standing there.? Usually, when guys are aggressive and they?re hitting back, the legs aren?t usually getting hit.?

If the NFLPA agrees to the change, it won?t matter.? And it won?t simply be a matter of paying fines.? Like all other uniform violations, the NFL eventually will prevent a non-conforming player from taking the field.

That?ll be the quickest way to get all players to accept the changes.

Red Bulls are an odd bunch

6. Houston Dynamo ??A win and two draws over eight days is commendable for a club with so much going on. The stadium is open, the hard road slog is behind them and Dominic Kinnear?s team even has a little breathing room for a few days. Now, the season can really start.

5. New York Red Bulls ??It?s just hard to make sense of these crazy kids. Few teams are as beat up, and yet this is Major League Soccer?s hottest team (statistically speaking) with five wins in a row. We know what they are saying around Red Bull Arena: ?Why ask why? Just keep the party going!? Heath Pearce debuted at center back in the latest victory, Saturday over Montreal (while playing a man down for half an hour, no less.)

4. D.C. United ??Two home games brought two fairly comfortable wins (over Colorado and Toronto). Dwayne De Rosario is on one of his signature tears with three goals in Round 11. And don?t look now, rest of league, but Andy Najar and previously muted DP striker Hamdi Salihi are starting to feel it.

3. San Jose Earthquakes ??Alan Gordon (pictured) to the rescue. Again! For the second consecutive week, the ?Quakes fell behind at home to a side they probably shouldn?t have (this time to Columbus). And for the second consecutive week, Gordon came off the bench to strike late, helping his side split the points. It?s exciting, but clearly the Buck Shaw bunch would like better on home grass.

2. Seattle Sounders ??Everyone gets excited about bicycle kick goals, and I get it. They?re cool and all. But what gets my little soccer shorts going are goals like Fredy Montero?s late equalizer in a 2-2 draw at Vancouver. The ability to make space and then to perfectly, skillfully draw a curling arc with the ball around a stranded, helpless goalkeeper? Yeah, that does it for me. (And it?s the kind of goal that Montero manufactures from time to time, hardly his first artistic maneuver.)

1. Real Salt Lake ??Unbeaten in five and well-rested (idle in Round 11) ahead of a home match this weekend? Yeah, the Western Conference leaders will certainly take that. They probably will have to deal with the absence of midfielder Kyle Beckerman and goalkeeper Nick Rimando (although it?s possible Rimando could be released back to the club.)

Vodka and Cavier

(via lemongum)

I don't ask for much in life. I just want a guy, that loves me the same way i love him.

I want a guy who knows how torturing how periods can be, and go through it with me. He will hug me very tightly when my cramps hurt so bad that i can't even walk. I want a guy that tells me how much he loves me every ten seconds and loves me just the way i am. And he will tell me 'Hey, darling. I hate to go on a streets with you because i'm afraid i might lose you as all the guys keep staring at you.' He knows that he is not the only guy that wants me, that needs me. He is thankful for having me, he doesn't take my for granted. Isn't it suppose to be like that?

When a guys starts taking a relationship for granted, isn't it disasters? No more sweet and cute messages. No more funny and silly arguments. No more surprises, small little gifts. Anniversaries. No more nothing. This is really bad right? But hey, this is life. How many wonderful guys are there in this world? Not many, and what makes you so sure that you'll get that one in a million guy? If girls ain't sure at all, why fall so hard for that guy? We girls, can't even answer that question.

You know this is funny. We all know how love hurts, all the heartbreaking moments. All those times where you can really feel a knife stabbing your heart. All those lies you've heard, yet you still fall for it over and over again. All those 'i will change' and 'give me one more chance' scenarios. Is this what love is really all about? Misery? Pain? Never-ending tears? Really? This is how harsh reality is? We don't have an answer, but we will never fall out of love.. We'll never get bored of it..

Some may be really lucky, they do have a guy who tells you 'i love you' every night. Bring popcorns and snacks and come to your house for a movie marathons on the days when you're really down, and he is all you need. Guys that text you every morning to give you a reason to start a brand new day. Who gives you small surprises on the smallest anniversary you can ever think of, like 'the-first-time-we-talked-to-each-other' anniversary. Giving cards just for fun. Girls will never feel insecure in relationships like that. Really lucky.

I don't think my post is getting anywhere in life. No start, no end. I don't know. An ideal guy is really hard to describe. I don't wanna elaborate so much if not i will have a ten pages long 'ideal guy' post. And i'll seem really picky on guys. But nooooooo, i ain't like that okay. I go along with a lot of guys, but none of them just gives me the 'this-is-the-one' feeling. I don't know. Maybe it isn't time yet. Hmm.. Till here then. See you around lovelies.

entertainment news uk: How do I get an exotic pet license? | Pet oNo

ok I?m 14 years old and I was wondering what it takes to get an Exotic Pet license in Minnesota. I want to get a pet raccoon.

A 14 year old is not able to get a license for that, only your parents would. Usually to obtain this kind of license, you need a legit reason, you cannot just get one because you want one, which basically means you cannot have one as a regular pet, you can just get them for rehabilitating or like zoos can have these animals for educations purposes ect.

And according to this pet raccoon website it is illegal to keep them as pets in your state, a license is irrelevant:

http://mypetraccoons.com/raccoon_006.html

Even if it was legal, you are not old enough or mature enough to care for and handle this kind of pet. They are wild animals, not domesticated like most common pets, so it takes experience to own and handle them. Young kids should not have these kinds of pets. They can be destructive without the right care and proper knowledge. They can chew things, they can bite, they cannot be kept in a cage, they need special vets (regular vets usually won?t see wild animals because of health risks) so you would probably need to drive hours and pay quite a fee to get it taken care of, they have special dietary requirements, and they live longer than you can commit to at this age.

Maybe in 15 years if you?re still interested and you live in a different state where pet raccoons are legal, and you do a lot of research and find someone who breeds them, then you can start to consider it. But all in all I would not suggest getting a pet raccoon. You may think they?re cute, but that doesn?t mean you should own one.

Raccoons aren?t even rodents, if you don?t know that, you shouldn?t be owning one regardless. It takes tons of knowledge, money, and responsibility to own wild animals.

Measuring CO2 to fight global warming, enforce future treaty

ScienceDaily (May 14, 2012) ? If the world's nations ever sign a treaty to limit emissions of climate-warming carbon dioxide gas, there may be a way to help verify compliance: a new method developed by scientists from the University of Utah and Harvard.

Using measurements from only three carbon-dioxide (CO2) monitoring stations in the Salt Lake Valley, the method could reliably detect changes in CO2 emissions of 15 percent or more, the researchers report in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for the week of May 14, 2012.

The method is a proof-of-concept first step even though it is less precise than the 5 percent accuracy recommended by a National Academy of Sciences panel in 2010. The study's authors say satellite monitoring of carbon dioxide levels ultimately may be more accurate than the ground-based method developed in the new study.

"The primary motivation for the study was to take high-quality data of atmospheric CO2 in an urban region and ask if you could predict the emissions patterns based on CO2 concentrations in the air," says study coauthor Jim Ehleringer, a distinguished professor of biology at the University of Utah.

"The ultimate use is to verify CO2 emissions in the event that the world's nations agree to a treaty to limit such emissions," he says. "The idea is can you combine concentration information -- CO2 in the air near the ground -- and weather patterns, which is wind blowing, and mathematically determine emissions based on that information."

Ehleringer did the study with four Massachusetts atmospheric scientists: Kathryn McKain and Steven Wofsy of Harvard University, and Thomas Nehrkorn and Janusz Eluszkiewicz of Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc.

While the method can detect changes of 15 percent or more in CO2 levels, determining absolute levels is tricky and depends on certain assumptions, but it can be done, Ehleringer says.

"The model [new method] predicts more CO2 emissions than we see," based on a federal government survey that previously estimated carbon dioxide emissions based on interviews with gas- and coal-burning utilities and sellers of fuel and natural gas, he says. "That shouldn't surprise you. People are under-reporting."

Estimating CO2 Emissions

Ehleringer began monitoring carbon dioxide levels in the Salt Lake Valley in 2002 as part of a National Science Foundation-funded study of the urban airshed. The monitoring network measures CO2 from six sites across the Salt Lake Valley and a seventh well above the valley at Snowbird.

"It is the most extensive publicly available and online data set of CO2 concentrations in an urban area in the world," he says.

The new study created a computer simulation of CO2 emissions in the Salt Lake Valley using three sources of information:

  • CO2 measurements from three sites -- the University of Utah, downtown Salt Lake City and Murray, Utah, about halfway south down the valley's length.
  • Data from weather stations in the valley, crunched through weather forecasting software used to predict wind and air circulation.
  • Satellite data showing what parts of the valley are covered by homes, other buildings, trees, agriculture and so on.

The emissions estimates from the simulation were compared with the results of the government survey that estimates CO2 emissions.

"You come up with estimates for emissions that are within 15 percent or better of the actual emissions for the region," Ehleringer says.

Even though that is not as precise as desired by the National Academy of Sciences, "it is a very powerful first step," he adds. "However we would like to be within 5 percent for treaty verification purposes."

Because urban regions are major sources of CO2, "a large fraction of a country's emissions likely emanate from such regions, and results from several representative cities over time could provide strong tests of claimed emission reductions at national or regional scales," the researchers write.

The simulation showed how ground-level CO2 concentrations increased overnight when air was calm, and then decreased in the morning as sunlight mixed the air and plants consumed CO2 due to photosynthesis. Sometimes the simulation failed to catch the exact time this mixing occurred.

That is part of the reason the researchers argue satellite measurements through a mile-thick vertical column of air may better estimate CO2 concentrations and thus emissions by being less sensitive to ground-level variations close and far from emissions sources like smokestacks or intersections with idling vehicles.

Several satellites around the world now make limited CO2 measurements. But the researchers write that "no presently planned satellite has the necessary orbit or targeting capability" for the desired urban CO2 measurements.

Several previous studies looked at CO2 levels in various cities, but none at the full urban scale or with accuracy near what is required for treaty verification, the researchers say. The only study that accurately measured an urban area's CO2 emissions over time -- in Heidelberg, Germany -- did so with a method too expensive for routine use.

Ehleringer's part of the research was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The study says his coauthors were funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation and -- without specifics -- "by the U.S. intelligence community," which would be involved in treaty verification.

Samsung Galaxy S III battery tested by GSMArena, lasts as long as your tablet

Image

Samsung made much ado over the Galaxy S III's 2,100mAh battery, but we've been wondering whether or not that power pack was a major perk or just a necessity to offset that hefty Exynos 4 Quad. One of what looks to be a growing number of escaped pre-release devices was put through the ringer in battery tests and came out looking spic-and-span: it lasted for just over 10 hours for video and voice, or long enough to make even a tablet like the new iPad or Transformer Prime break a sweat. Web browsing wasn't quite so hot, though, which at a bit over five hours was well behind the seven hours of an iPhone 4S. Don't expect the seemingly infinite battery of the Droid RAZR Maxx, and don't be surprised if final devices handle differently, but those with the international Galaxy S III should make it through at least a few interminable meetings watching their favorite reruns... not that we'd condone such a thing.
