Oakley unveils Airwave ski goggles equipped with Recon's MOD Live heads-up display, iOS app

Oakley's Airwave ski goggles riders with Recon's MOD Live HUD

Remember late last year when Recon Instruments introduced its MOD Live Android-enabled heads-up display for the likes of ski goggles?Joining the ranks of other optics makers, Oakley's partnered with the company to seamlessly integrate the augmented-reality unit into its own goggles, dubbed Airwave. It's not just another shell for the system, either, as Oakley will be providing a companion app that'll work with iOS -- which seems to be first official instance as such since Recon itself said it would be coming earlier this year. The MOD Live itself is otherwise the same right-eye positioned system (providing a perceived 14-inch display at five feet away) we've seen for almost a year now, so don't expect to get the clearest picture if you're left eye dominant or use contact lenses for distance. Furthermore, there's still GPS for tracking friends / navigation, and Bluetooth to work with a water-resistant wrist remote that allows you to control your smartphone and the display itself. Of course, this also means Recon's Android SDK will also be workable, as will your Contour camera.

If you're interested in Oakley's spin on the MOD Live, the Airwave will hit Apple stores on October 31st for $600 in your choice of black with a black Iridium lens, or a white with black graphics and a "fire" colored variant of the lens -- yes, they're interchangeable just like most of Oakley's other specs. If you're curious for further details in the meantime, check out the simulation video and press release after the break. Now, how about those full-on smart glasses to take on Google Glass as the company's CEO mentioned in April?

When is a grandparent doing too much?

My sister has two grandchildren, and ever since they were born, their son and daughter-in-law have been broke in the two months leading up to Christmas. My sister always goes out and buys Santa Claus for the kids, but she always lets it look like the parents bought it. They waste money all year and then take advantage of my sister. It makes me so mad. I end up giving my sister money so she can put on a Christmas dinner. This year she's been out of work, yet the daughter-in-law has already started talking about how she's told the kids it's going to be a lean Christmas this year because they don't have any money. When does it get to a stopping point?

Spain anti-austerity protests draw thousands

Protestors shout slogans against austerity measures announced by the Spanish government as they march to the Parliament in Madrid, Spain, Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government has hiked taxes, cut spending, including a wage-cut for civil servants, and introduced stinging labor reforms in a bid to persuade investors and international authorities that he can manage Spain's finances without the need for a full-blown bailout. However, Spain's public finances have been overwhelmed by the cost of rescuing some of its banks and regional governments, many of which have experienced heavy losses following a property sector crash in 2008. (AP) ? Several thousand people marched to Spain's parliament in an anti-austerity protest Saturday, but were held back from surrounding the building by metal rail barricades and a large police presence.

The "Surround parliament" protest group had called on people to gather at Plaza de Espana and march on the legislature to express their opposition to spending cuts and tax hikes introduced by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government.

Police on horseback and with dogs had earlier arrived at Neptuno fountain next to parliament in preparation for crowd control duties as the protesters marched 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) from the muster point.

Protesters were accompanied along the route of the march by a strong police escort, including vans with reinforced windows.

Demonstration organizers said protesters will be asked to hold a minute of silence with their backs turned on parliament to express their disapproval of government public sector cuts while offering financial support to ailing banks.

"And now they are going to give banks a bailout, rescue them as if they were princesses," said Alan Pipo, 70.

"They should be put out on the streets, just like all those families who are being evicted from their homes because they are unable to keep up with mortgage payments."

Thousands also marched in the Barcelona to protest education cuts in the northeastern region of Catalonia.

Earlier, about 3,000 off-duty police officers had also demonstrated to protest the government's austerity measures, including the cancellation of their Christmas bonuses.

The police protest blocked one of the capital's central boulevards opposite the Interior Ministry. On-duty police officers watched as their off-duty colleagues demonstrated by throwing fireworks and chanting slogans.

A demonstrator was injured when a firework he was set to throw exploded in his hand. Many protesters draped themselves in Spanish flags and added to the ear-splitting noise by blowing their police-issued whistles.

Preparing for his return from a business promotion trip to India, King Juan Carlos told journalists that, "From outside, Spain looks better, you come away with a better image." He added, "Inside, you want to weep, it's all woes, but we have to overcome them."

Since being voted to office in general elections in November, Rajoy has hiked taxes, cut spending, including a wage-cut for civil servants, and introduced stinging labor reforms in a bid to persuade investors and international authorities that he can manage Spain's finances without the need for a full-blown bailout.

However, Spain's public finances have been overwhelmed by the cost of rescuing some of its banks and regional governments, many of which have experienced heavy losses following a property sector crash in 2008.

One Spaniard in four is unemployed as the economic crisis tightens its grip. The government is under pressure to seek aid to ease debts while the country sinks into its second recession in three years.

Economic output has contracted for five quarters in a row and Spain's troubled banks have been granted a ?100 billion ($130 billion) loan facility by the 17 eurozone countries.

"We can't go on like this. We have a right to a public health system and quality schools for our kids," said Paloma Martinez, 62. "We are indignant and have no fear."

Writing a Press Release: 10 Do's and Don't's

how to write a press releaseGuest blog post by Katelyn Helgemoe
Communications Coordinator at Phoenix NAP

Press releases are published constantly. But what makes the difference between one that gets sent straight to the delete box and one that gets huge media coverage and steady follow-up? There are many things to consider when writing a press release, but below are the top 10 do?s and don?ts to keep in mind when drafting yours.

10. Use quotes (and cite your sources!) Quotes from key influencers can add credibility and personality to any press release. Additionally, a strong quotation from a top-level executive will allow readers to fully view the benefits and impact of the statement.

9. Don?t try to sell anything. The main point of a press release should always be to announce something newsworthy. Your peers and the public may be interested in the actual content, but if it comes across as too pitchy or advertising, the main announcement will get lost behind the selling points.

8. Write an attention-grabbing headline. Writing a successful, newsworthy press release is one thing, but actually getting people to read it is another. Quirky, loud and fun headlines will highly increase the chances of a press release to be read. Remember, the headline is the first bit of information people will see about your press release, so it must reel them in!

7. Know your audience. Although press releases are commonly sent out to the general public, it is still important to pinpoint who your target audience is. It is through this audience that you will gain insightful feedback from, monitor and analyze data about, and potentially network and connect with some within the audience.

6. Include secondary facts, information and details. Additional to the main announcement, a press release needs to include supporting details. Provide a brief background, interesting facts and other bits of information to add depth to the announcement.

5. Answer all of the ?W?s? (who, what, where, when and why.) As much as an attention-grabbing headline is important, an informative lead is equally vital. Including the five ?W?s? in the first few sentences of a press release allows readers to quickly understand what a company is announcing.

4. Don?t use first-person ? third-person only! Reading a press release should be like reading an article out of the newspaper, which is written by a neutral, unbiased journalist and not as if the writer is speaking directly to a person.

3. Include up-to-date contact information. Once a press release is live, reporters or other news outlets may reach out to follow up, so it?s extremely important to include current contact information for an individual who will be not only reachable but can answer any questions regarding the release.

2. Don?t make errors. As simple as it seems, spelling and grammatical errors can be easily overlooked by journalists but equally as easy for readers to spot. Not only does it pay to have another person proofread a press release, it also prevents a company from losing credibility.

1. Be accurate, clear and concise. Spend a few minutes verifying information, fact checking and doing your homework to ensure that everything in the press release is clear, concise and, most importantly, accurate.

Just remember the main objective of writing a press release is to articulate a clear story that will grab and keep the readers? attention. Follow the above do?s and don?t?s to successfully do so!

Microsoft's biggest gamble yet: risking the name 'Windows'

6 hrs.

Microsoft's come a long way in the last two years. Thursday is the official launch of Windows 8. How PC users respond to the radically redesigned and architected operating system may greatly affect the future of Microsoft. But Microsoft's made a big mistake: they've stretched the Windows brand so thin that it's going to confuse customers?--?and maybe even drive them away.

It's not news to Microsoft how important Windows 8 is to the company,?as well as its sister operating system Windows RT that powers the first Microsoft Surface tablet. This is the last chance Microsoft has to get into the race beside Apple and Google for the future of mobile?--?and perhaps desktop?--?computing. But even though Windows 8 was officially announced only?16 months ago, looking at how the tech community ?responded to it at the time reminds how audacious?--?and in hindsight, how essential?--?Microsoft's Windows 8 strategy has become.

Although there was a casual mention of Windows 8 and its ability to run on the ARM-based processors?--?the same sort that power iPhones and mobile tablet?s--?at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, the first official look at Windows 8 came at the D9 conference on June 1st, 2011. All Things D's Ina Fried had an exclusive first look and interview with Windows President Steven Sinofsky, who is quoted right out of the gate saying, ?[Windows 8] is ?no compromise? and that?s really important to us."

But there was a compromise to come: Windows 8 doesn't actually run on ARM processors; instead, that's what Windows RT is for. The new "Windows Store" apps?--?think of them like iPad or Android tablet apps?--?run on both Windows 8 and Windows RT devices. But traditional?--?some might say "real"?--?Windows apps like Photoshop or Minecraft will only run on Windows 8 machines that use an x86 chip. (At least until their developers create dual-Windows versions, something Microsoft obviously hopes will become more common.)

There are also native Windows RT apps that just run on RT, just to make it more confusing.

At the time, it was also presumed that Windows Store apps would be more like simple web widgets. Wrote Fried:

The other type of application, which has to be written in HTML5 and Javascript, looks more like a mobile application, filling the full screen. Internet Explorer 10, which is part of Windows 8, has already been configured to run in this mode, as have several widget-like apps for checking stock prices and weather.

Those widgets ended up being quite a bit more like traditional Windows applications, developed in a variety of languages. ) And Windows Store apps for Windows 8 can run on Windows RT as well...sometimes. (To speak nerdy, developers can choose to compile for ARM, but it's not required.)

What becomes apparent when looking through the coverage of Windows 8 from a year-and-a-half, though, is that at the time Microsoft thought it would be able to make a single version of its operating system that would work for desktops, laptops, and tablets alike. (Funnily enough, at the time, Microsoft was calling "Windows 8" a working title; it wouldn't officially name the product until 2012.)

What's clear is this: Windows 8 started as something easy to understand, a unified operating system that would run on all types of hardware. Along the way, Microsoft realized they'd bitten off more than they could chew, split off Windows RT from Windows 8, and sowed a lot of confusion that's going to get worse before it gets better.

What's disappointing in all of this is that Windows 8?--?the full-blown version?--?has been getting mostly high praise from those who have used its many preview builds. ?Tim Anderson, writing for the Guardian, called a summer build proof that Microsoft could have "turned on a pin and transformed its client and consumer operating system from one that is hopelessly bogged down in legacy and unsuited for modern mobile computing, to one that is beautifully engineered for the next generation of cloud-connected devices."?

(Broadly, anyone using Windows 8 on a touchscreen device loves it, while those using a ?keyboard and mouse tend to be of mixed minds.)

But for the first time since Windows NT (which wasn't a consumer-facing version of Windows), Microsoft has been sloppy with its most precious brand.?And that's just at the highest level; inside the operating system and on the web, Microsoft has a supercilious tendency to slap the "Windows" name on everything from DropBox clones ("Windows Live Mesh") to file browsers ("Windows Explorer," not to be confused with "Internet Explorer," Windows' default web browser).

It's a mess. It's confusing. And it's ultimately going to be a big factor in confusion and dissatisfaction for a lot of customers over the coming months. (Especially when you consider there will be another Microsoft Surface tablet coming soon that does run the full-blown Windows 8.)

Yet a quick look at recent history makes one thing clear: Microsoft is making it up as they go along. And that might not be good enough anymore.

The 10 Biggest Mistakes :: PDCA Residential Forum

Residential forum - painter

Let?s hope your competitor is making these mistakes.

This from The Contractor?s Business Coach. Intended for General Contractors, most of the top mistakes apply to us painters as well.

?

by Ron Roberts

It?s been several years since I published my first report: The 10 Biggest Mistakes Contractors Make. I wrote and released the report during the peak of the construction boom in late 2006. The report was intended to be a warning shot across the bow of construction company owners. I knew most were only succeeding due to the free-flowing money that flooding the real estate market. If the money was cut off, the economy would turn and the poor habits of contractors everywhere were going to hit them like a Tsunami. Few would survive.

In hindsight, the economy turned much worse than I thought it could. Lending completely dried up. Developers were forced to liquidate well-performing properties to accommodate the insanely tight new bank capital requirements.

As I look over the list today, I?d probably re-order a few of the mistakes in light of the present economy. However, the 10 are still the 10. I rarely meet a contractor who isn?t failing on at least five of them. Crazily, messing up on one of them at the exact wrong time can put you out of business. It?s not likely, but it?s possible. More commonly when a contractor goes out of business he has made 8 or 9 of the mistakes.

The following is a greatly shortened version. The full report is available at www.ContractorsBusinessCoach.com.

Grab a blank piece of paper. Drawn a line down the middle of it and a line across the top. Above the left column write INSIGHTS and above the right column write ACTIONS.

List the insights you?re gaining from the report. Next to each insight, write down the actions you?re going to take to protect your business.

MISTAKE #1: NOT SELLING AGGRESSIVELY

The biggest business mistake you can make is assuming that no matter what you say, people will always take the lowest price. Huge mistake. HUGE!

Clients, including general contractors, will ignore the lowest price offer when it is in their best interest to do so. In other words, selling is helping a prospect choose the right course of action, even if it comes at a higher price.

When you don?t sell:

  • You struggle to make money.
  • You work for bad clients.
  • You lose good people.

When you do sell:

  • You set your own price?and profits
  • You pick and choose your clients.
  • You can hire the best workers who help you maintain your competitive advantage.

The simple truth is; commercial contractors have been trained to offer the lowest price they can.

Clients Will Pay More For Your Services
Clients pay to have problems solved. It?s that simple. You must convince your prospect that you will solve his problem better than the next guy and the right solution costs more.

MISTAKE #2: NOT HAVING AN EFFECTIVE LEAD GENERATION SYSTEM

Commercial trade contractors often rely on general contractors to track down work opportunities. Tracking down low-price-wins bidding opportunities is not a lead generation system.

Contractors who thrive do so by generating negotiated work. Contractors who never land negotiated work have broken lead generation systems. It?s that simple. Negotiated work is the acid test of your lead generation system.

If your lead generation system is not producing ample opportunity for negotiated work, you need to fix the problem.
Marketing Efforts Fail When
They Are Not Performed Consistently.

Okay, so you?ve committed yourself to generating good leads, you deployed your favorite two lead generation systems, and worked them hard, but the leads aren?t coming in. You?re growing very frustrated. You?ve spent all that money and time on lead generation and it?s BOMBED.

Your message isn?t hitting your prospects? hot buttons. If your marketing message isn?t hitting your prospects? emotional hot button you?re flushing money down the toilet.

This is the reason lead generation is so tough to get right. Whatever you are saying, in writing or in person, must be phrased almost perfectly.

Test your marketing message. Consistently work your lead generation system. Reap the rewards.

MISTAKE #3: WORKING FOR BAD CLIENTS

There really is no other way to say it, so here it goes:

Bad Clients Will Break Your Business

Bad clients come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds but they all have one thing in common. They have completely unrealistic expectations. They want steak on a hamburger budget. They?ll throw you under the bus to save a buck.

Bad clients live by the golden rule, ?He who has the gold sets the rules.? Bad clients use their control of your cash to force you to do whatever they want you to do?including accepting less money than your contract calls for.

You have to be sniff bad clients out before they steal your life savings. Do you often feel your clients are out to get you? To take advantage of you? Guess what?
Most are.

How many times have you had money withheld without legitimate reason? How many times has a client demanded you go above and beyond the work scope just because they believed that?s what they were paying for? How many times have you been told your price is too high and you MUST bring it down?

Your clients don?t care about you. All they care about is about is getting their job done on time, in budget, and exactly as they want it?whether they paid for that or not. They couldn?t care less how you come out, whether you lose your shirt or not. That?s not their concern. That?s why over 75% of construction companies go out of business within 5 years and over 90% fail to make it 10 years.

You must stay away from clients who:

  • Withhold payment as long as they wish.
  • Refuse to compromise.
  • Nickel and dime you to death.
  • Back-charge you for perceived quality faults.
  • Verbally order changes then refuse to pay a fair price for the change after the work is in.
  • Use design teams who produce incomplete or error-filled drawings and specs.

You just can?t escape bad clients. Don?t let bad clients put you out of business.

MISTAKE #4: SIGNING BAD CONTRACTS

The laws governing the construction industry are well established. Here is what they boil down to:

You Will Be Held Accountable To Any
Terms and Conditions You Sign For.

Most contractors sign a bad contract now and then. When you do, you open a Pandora?s Box of headaches such as:

  • Agreeing to a scope-of-work that you didn?t cover with your price.
  • Throwing away your ability to force prompt payment.
  • Throwing away your right to sue.
  • Giving your client the ability to avoid paying for change orders.

Here are three actions that will keep you out of hot water:

  1. Learn to read contract language or find a good construction lawyer.
  2. Create a set of standard contracts and proposals.
  3. Read every contract closely before signing or pay your lawyer to.

Contracts are a necessary part of our industry. Ignore their language and you may end up paying the ultimate price ? your life savings.

MISTAKE #5: NOT HAVING A LARGE CREDIT LINE

(Note: here is the one mistake I would re-word in light of today?s incredibly tight lending market. I?d re-word this to be MISTAKE #5: NOT MAINTAINING A LARGE NEST EGG)

The commercial construction industry is notorious for its slow pay. 60 day pay cycles are quite common (update: 90+ days is now common). Slow pay stresses your ability to pay bills on time, most of which can?t be delayed, such as payroll.

While working for a General Contractor, it never ceased to amaze me how few of our subcontractors had credit lines. Probably less than one out of ten did. That is no way to run a construction company.

You need to solve your cash flow problems before they arise. The solution is quite obvious: arrange for a line of credit with your bank. (update: leave money in the bank ? a lot of money)

Your Credit Line Should Equal
10% of Your Annual Sales

Assuming you have sufficient professional and personal assets to back a credit line, here?s how to get that line going.

1. Have your CPA prepare a balance sheet for your personal assets and liabilities.
2. Copy your reviewed financial statements from the last two years.
3. Have your CPA prepare your financial statement year-to-date for the current year.
4. Create a 12 month cash flow budget that shows projected sales, job expenses, overhead expenses, inbound cash, monthly cash deficit or supply, and year-to-date accumulated cash flow.
5. Sit down with your banker, go over the documents and ask him whether he can get the line of credit you need.
6. If your bank is unwilling to provide the line you need, call your CPA, insurance agent, and bond agent and ask for banking references.
7. Schedule meetings based on their recommendations.
8. Keep meeting bankers until you find one that will provide your company with the support you need to run your business right.

Always Arrange For Your Credit Line
WHEN YOU DON?T NEED IT!

Waiting until you need credit is the surest guarantee your bank will not grant it. Always deal with a bank from a position of strength.

Of course, once you?ve been awarded your credit line your work isn?t done. As your business grows, your line needs to grow. To keep your banker happy and to get him to raise your line, you must:

Run A Profitable Business

You also need to:

1. Keep your balance sheet strong by leaving money in your business.
2. Pay off your line as soon as the cash comes in.
3. Keep your debt to equity reasonable.
4. Keep your banker up to speed on your business? progress and future plans.

Proper cash management can save you a ton of money. Work with your banker. Grow your line-of-credit.

MISTAKE #6: FAILING TO HOLD FIELD LEADERS ACCOUNTABLE

Who do you pay to:

  • Ensure your crews work safely?
  • Ensure your crews perform quality work?
  • Ensure your crews hit their production targets?

Your crew leaders, your foremen, and /or your superintendents. That?s who.
What happens when your field leaders fail to perform their jobs correctly? They endanger employees, customer satisfaction, budgets, and schedules. That?s a hefty price to pay for the poor performance of just a handful of people.

Let?s be honest here, field leaders have a tough job. So hard in fact, they rarely do their job right. Most contractors are so fearful of losing the leaders they have, they are hesitant to hold them accountable for poor performance. That is a costly mistake to make.

MISTAKE #7: NOT KNOWING THE COST OF WORK
Few contractors really know their cost of work or the speed at which their crews move. The problem usually shows up the first time they bid on an out-of-the-ordinary scope of work. As the contractor gets deep into the job, he suddenly realizes he is woefully short on man-hours. Has this happened to you?

Let?s face facts. A contractor must be able to predict how long his crews will take to complete their work. Otherwise projects will consistently run over budget and year end results will be less than expected and desired.

Here are a few suggestions to save you a lot of headache with your job costing.

Find the middle ground. You can mess up your tracking by being too general, assigning all hours to the job without further breakdown, or too detailed, assigning every hour to the cost codes used by your estimator.

Have your crews assign their labor and equipment time to the four to six tasks that account for 80% of the work. Have them throw the rest into an ?other? category.

Do not lump equipment costs into overhead and spread them across all jobs based on job price. That approach typically leads to horrible job selection decisions. Know the average hourly cost of owning and operating each piece of equipment and charge it to the job based on hours used.

Financial accounting and tax accounting procedures are in direct conflict with proper job costing techniques. Unless you are running one of the high-end accounting packages (Timberline, for example), you may need to run two separate accounting systems: one for financial accounting and one for job costing. For contractors generating less than $5 million in sales, the easiest solution is to use spreadsheets for tracking and analyzing job costs.

Remember, not knowing how long it takes to put in work will lead to massive financial losses. Make sure your job costing system is producing the information you need.

MISTAKE #8: ACCEPTING HIGH TURNOVER

Construction workers are nomadic by nature. Guns-for-hire if you will. Furthermore, there isn?t exactly an over-abundance of really good ones. You are in a recruiting war at all times.

In order to be profitable, your employees must perform up to expectations; they won?t if you are constantly suffering turnover. Turnover is a killer.

Turnover leaves you standing in place. You end up wearing yourself out on staffing tasks. Turnover takes time away from sales and marketing activities. It takes time away from people development. It takes time away from your family.

Finding and recruiting good workers is difficult, especially if your company gains the reputation for being hard on employees. Research shows that 70% of employees who change jobs do so because they don?t like their immediate boss (this touches on Mistake # 6, failing to hold field leaders accountable). You?d better create a management team (including foremen and crew leaders) who knows how to get the most out of its people without ticking them off.
High turnover is a warning sign that your management team needs to make a few changes in its approach to managing the personnel. It really doesn?t have any choice.

MISTAKE #9: PURSUING A FOOLISH STRATEGY

We?ve talked about selling, marketing, people management, cash flow, but we haven?t addressed the big picture problem: trying to win with a losing game plan (strategy).

What strategy do most contractors use? Hire me! I?ll do anything you want. You got cash? I got the time.

Here is a list of the common strategy problems I see:

  • Trying to do too much with too little office support.
  • Taking on jobs they don?t have the right equipment for.
  • Taking jobs larger and more complex than their team is capable of managing effectively.
  • Pursuing work they enjoy instead of work they can make money on.
  • Putting the wrong people in wrong jobs.
  • Trying to compete on low price (Mistake #1) when they aren?t the lowest cost provider.

Very few contractors go through the strategy process systematically. When they don?t, they court trouble. Your clients? expectations and your competition?s aggression change yearly. Your must keep your business strategy current. You must keep it realistic.

Find your company?s core strength ? the thing you do better than every other contractor in your market. That could me your understanding of a certain client (niche market). That could be your use of technology. That could be your ability to attract highly skilled workers. That could be your financial strength. It could be several things.

Figure out how that core strength gives you an advantage that is meaningful to your client. Figure out a way to express that core strength persuasively to your clients (your Unique Selling Proposition).

Build your lead generation and staffing systems around this core strength / Unique Selling Proposition.

In order to win, you must pursue a strong, unique strategy. If you are adopting the same strategy as three or four other contractors in your area, you are fighting an uphill battle. Play by different rules.

MISTAKE #10: RUNNING THE BUSINESS WITHOUT A PLAN

As the old saying goes ?When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.?

Contractors tend take whatever work comes their way and spend whatever money they feel like spending. When they do, they arrive at the end of the year surprised to discover:

  • Their year was unprofitable.
  • Their crews stood around a lot.
  • Their equipment was often unavailable due to breakdowns.
  • Most of the jobs ran significantly behind schedule.

Any of this sound familiar? It comes from not planning.

Few contractors plan well. Planning is a tedious and boring task to action oriented folks (like contractors). Ask yourself this, ?How likely am I to meet my business goals if I don?t figure out exactly how I?m going to meet them?? Not very likely.

Would you try to build a building, bridge, or parking lot without plans? You shouldn?t try to build a business without them either.
The 10 Biggest Mistakes Contractors Make

Let?s revisit the list of mistakes you must avoid if you are to reach your financial goals, stabilize your company, and live a less stressful life.

Mistake #1: Not selling aggressively
Mistake #2: Not having an effective lead generation system
Mistake #3: Working for bad clients
Mistake #4: Signing bad contracts
Mistake #5: Not Having a Large Credit Line
Mistake #6: Failing to Hold Field Leaders Accountable
Mistake #7: Not Knowing the Cost of Work
Mistake #8: Accepting High Turnover
Mistake #9: Pursuing a Weak Strategy
Mistake #10: Running the Business Without a Plan

Networking Marketing Tips To Explode Your Company Growth - PDF

Networking Marketing Tips To Explode Your Company
Growth

These tips can help you to spread the message of your network marketing.

Network marketing can be a game where you fight to sign up the most people. To be sure
you do not do this, think instead of how to work to help others and yourself.

Review the program's compensation plan carefully and do not join a network marketing
program until you understand it completely. You should look for a plan that gives you high
returns, offers several streams of income and provides a residual income. Your sales will
refer back to your sponsor. This is great because sponsors are helpful and provide leverage.

Treat your network marketing like a business instead of a hobby. If you want to do well, you
need to act like network marketing is a job and dedicate yourself to doing what it takes to
help your business grow.

Know the ins and outs of your products. You need to be able to answer questions effectively.
If people see that you are enthusiastic about the product, then they'll be enthusiastic about
selling it too. This will also help you give reviews filled with honesty and sincerity that will be
appreciated by potential clients.

Building a website is a great idea for network marketing, but even using social networking
sites is a start. An interesting and well-designed blog is a great launching point for your
marketing efforts. Similarly, a social networking presence and your own individual website
will be excellent marketing tools. Participating in online communities is another way you can
look for opportunities to grow your network. Remember a well designed and active blog helps
too.

Think about helping people and not selling to them when you are network marketing. Don't
focus just on what is good about a product, instead, focus on how the product can help them.
Obviously people will be more willing to buy your product if they feel they really need it.

Learn what you can about who other people know. When you show the product you're
offering to someone, do it in a manner that will cause them to want to tell people they know
about it. If you're fairly certain that someone isn't going to purchase any of your products,
don't bother talking to him or her unless that person has his own extensive network.

Prior to investing in any network marketing business, contact the BBB (Better Business
Bureau). There are many legitimate companies out there, but there are also many bad ones.
Before making a commitment, check to ensure that it is the right company for your needs.
Check the BBB for feedback on the company you want to investigate, and look for signs of
any problems.

Include prospects on your website. This is a crucial facet of a good network marketing
strategy. Once they find your webpage, it is easier for you to convince them what you are
offering is worth their time. Concentrate on driving traffic to your page.

With the information that you've just read, your business can only improve. Your largest goal
is making as much cash as you can. Do your best to apply this new information and cultivate
your network marketing skills. The level of success you can achieve may exceed your
expectations!

On losing a pet?. - This Ain't Hell

October 23rd, 2012

A close friend emailed me this morning, and it kind of broke my heart.?

A bit of sad news to report to the group?

Yesterday Figo got out of the house, was hit by a car and died.

We had a really tough day yesterday. I think we?re both a bit numb today?it?s going to take a while to get over this one!

This is actually the second time in less than a week this has happened to someone close to me.

This week I was in Dallas for a wedding, and Jamie, Caro and I were talking about the worst day of our life, and it couldn?t include the death of a family member. I?m not sure if the day I lost my dog counts or not, but damn that was a tough one. I knew Forrest was dying, she was after all a 17 year old Golden Retriever. I begged God to give me one last weekend with her. It was Thanksgiving weekend, and I just wanted to spend every minute with her. But Thanksgiving morning broke, and I knew we couldn?t make it. She was in pain, and it killed me.

I remember the drive to the vet. Freshly back from Afghanistan, I?m driving a jeep with no roof, and tears streaming down my face. People driving by seemed really scared to see me. But I didn?t care at that point, I was done. I took her in. The vet administered the shot, and she kissed my nose before drifting off. I?ll never have a Thanksgiving Day again without thinking of her. I was so grateful for how peacefully it ended, but?. I didn?t get out of bed for 4 days.

As my buddy Mike said ??so tough. We get so attached to these little fuckers!?

I never know what to say to people, or how to act, even under the best of circumstances. Things like this pretty much paralyze me. What is the appropriate thing to say? Just ?Sorry for your loss? doesn?t cover it.

Anyway, I just feel so sad for my buddy right now.

Chronic constipation linked to increased risk of colorectal cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Patients with chronic constipation may be at increased risk of developing colorectal cancer and benign neoplasms, according to study findings unveiled October 22 at the American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) 77th Annual Scientific meeting in Las Vegas.

The study, "Risk of Developing Colorectal Cancer and Benign Neoplasm in Patients with Chronic Constipation," investigated the prevalence and incidence of colorectal cancer and benign neoplasms in 28,854 patients with chronic constipation (CC) and 86,562 controls without CC that were identified from a large retrospective U.S. claims database (January 1999-September 2011). Patients with at least two diagnoses of constipation were required to be 18 years or older and continuously enrolled in their health plan for at least one year following the study index date, which was the patient's first eligible diagnosis of constipation. Patients with diagnoses of irritable bowel syndrome or diarrhea were excluded.

Researchers found that:

? Both colorectal cancer (CRC) and benign neoplasms are more prevalent in chronic constipation patients compared to a control population free from chronic constipation.

? Among the patients that were not previously diagnosed with CRC or benign neoplasms prior to their index date, and after controlling for potential confounding factors including age, gender, family history of malignancies, and other non-gastrointestinal comorbidities, patients with CC were more at risk to develop CRC or benign neoplasms.

? The risk of developing CRC was 1.78 times higher for chronic constipation (CC) patients and the risk of developing benign neoplasms was 2.70 times higher. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, which are potentially also associated with the CC conditions, the incremental risk of developing CRC and benign neoplasms remained "consistently high."

"This study demonstrates an association, not causation, between chronic constipation and both colorectal cancer and benign neoplasms" said co-investigator Nicholas Talley, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Newcastle. "The postulated causal link between constipation and increased colorectal cancer risk is that longer transit times increase the duration of contact between the colonic mucosa and concentrated carcinogens in the lumen, such as bile acids or other carcinogens."

"The association between constipation and colorectal cancer deserves further exploration to better understand possible causal elements," said Dr. Talley. "Moreover, a review of the existing literature suggests prospective cohort studies have not identified this association. Thus, the findings may reflect recall bias."

"In this study, patients with chronic constipation were found to be at increased risk of developing colorectal cancer and benign neoplasms, said Dr. Talley. "Although chronic constipation is considered a relatively benign disease, practitioners should be aware of this potential association to monitor and treat accordingly," said Dr. Talley. "We encourage anyone with questions related to their condition to talk to their health care professional so that the specific health needs of each patient can be balanced with the risks and benefits of medications."

He also noted that further research is warranted to evaluate whether patients who have their constipation well controlled are at lower risk of developing CRC and benign neoplasms. "Longitudinal prospective studies to understand the causal relationship between chronic constipation and CRC would advance our understanding of prevention and management of these disorders."

About Chronic Constipation

Constipation, one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints in the United States, occurs when the colon absorbs too much water or if the colon's muscle contractions are slow or sluggish, causing the stool to move through the colon too slowly. As a result, stools can become hard and dry. More than 4 million Americans have frequent constipation, accounting for 2.5 million physician visits a year, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC).

Chronic constipation is a condition of infrequent bowel movements -- typically fewer than three bowel movements a week -- and difficult passage of stools which does not go away. In some cases, CC may be caused by an underlying medical condition.

About Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the US, according to the American Cancer Society. It is estimated that there will be 143,460 new cases diagnosed in the United States in 2012 and 51,690 deaths due to this disease. The American College of Gastroenterology's screening guidelines recommend colonoscopy as a "preferred" colorectal cancer prevention strategy beginning at age 50 (age 45 for African Americans.)

DENVER NUGGETS

2011-12 RECORD ? 38-28

PROJECTED ROTATIONS:

  • 1st String ? JaVale McGee (C), Kenneth Faried (PF), DaniloGallinari (SF), Andre Iguodala (SG), Ty Lawson (PG)
  • 2nd String ?TimofeyMozgov (C), Anthony Randolph (PF), Wilson Chandler (SF), Corey Brewer (SG), Andre Miller (PG)
  • Coaching staff ? George Karl (HC), Melvin Hunt, John Welch, Chad Iske (A)

LAST YEAR?S LEADERS:

Scoring ? Ty Lawson (16.4)
Rebounding ?Kenneth Faried (7.7)
Assists ? Andre Miller (6.7)
Steals ? Lawson (1.3)
Blocks ? JaVale McGee (1.6)*
Minutes ? Lawson (34.8)

* - Midseason acquisition

FRONTCOURT ? Strangely, the Nuggets seemed quite insistent on using TimofeyMozgov as their starting center, even when JaVale McGee came over from the Wizards in the Nene trade. That might not be the case anymore, as McGee has since adjusted to the Nuggets? system. His dominant shotblocking and developing offensive game are a given, same with his potential to one day average a double-double, perhaps even 15-10. Still, his maturity, or lack thereof, remains his biggest weakness ? coach George Karl should do a much better job trying to fix that. Mozgov should also continue to improve on both ends, as he still has potential to be an effective two-way player. KostaKoufos has a very similar skill set as Mozgov, but with less upside. Don?t expect another 24 starts (or even 15 minutes a game) from him this season.

Rookie power forward Kenneth Faried was a big surprise as last year?s 22nd overall pick. Despite standing just 6?8?, the player nicknamed ?Manimal? lived up to his new billing by proving to be an effective NBA rebounder and post-up scorer, if a bit shaky on defense. In a way, he?s quite reminiscent of Danny Fortson, another undersized four who had a few good years for the Nuggets in the late ?90s. At the three, DaniloGallinari was making lots of progress as a passer despite seeing his three-point shooting falter at just 33%. He should be back strong after an injury-shortened 2011-12 campaign. Wilson Chandler and Anthony Randolph will be the top backups. Chandler had a decent eight games last year after playing most of the lockout-shortened season in Europe; his explosive game and ability to play the two, three and four will help him in his projected new role as the Nuggets? sixth man, replacing Al Harrington. Randolph, who has teased us so often with his athleticism and potential, is heading fast towards bust territory and this may not be the season to turn things around. Unless, of course, somebody gets hurt. (B-)

BACKCOURT ? The big trade of the 2012-13 offseason (known to most as the Dwight Howard trade) landed the Nuggets but one player, one whose performance will be strictly monitored by fans worldwide. Andre Iguodala, at his best, is worth the price of a rising young starter (ArronAfflalo) and a reliable veteran reserve (Al Harrington) put together. But last year for the Sixers, he was definitely not at his best. He got less touches, scored less points and inexplicably struggled from the line, shooting just 62% of his charity attempts. But he still played great defense and helped in other areas of the game. He should do better on offense, though, as he has Ty Lawson and Andre Miller as his point guards. As the Nuggets? starting point guard from day one, Lawson was a threat both as a facilitator and a scorer. And few point guards can go as fast as he can.Though his height limits what he can do defensively, Lawson gives an honest effort in that area. Miller will again reprise his role as first guard off the bench and elder statesman for the Nuggets. He?s lost a few steps and has never been a good outside shooter, but he can still be very effective and efficient as a playmaker.

CoreyBrewer, a one-time lottery pick, has the inside track as reserve shooting guard because of his athleticism and defensive potential. He can also play small forward if asked to. Julyan Stone, who played sparingly last season, may very well lose his third-string job to first-round pick Evan Fournier. (B+)

COACHING ? George Karl was Scott Skiles before there was a Scott Skiles?at least in terms of temperament as head coach. He?s past that now ? he?s still intense, but no longer throws locker room tantrums or rips players mercilessly to the press just like he did back in the day. He?s a respected coach with a wide-open style of play that works well with the lineup the Nuggets have right now. (A-)

DRAFT ? When you?re drafting 20th overall or later with a young and talented starting lineup, normally you want the best player available. Though I think that honor should have gone to Jared Sullinger (21st, Boston) or Perry Jones (28th, OKC), the Nuggets did well enough by drafting French shooting guard Evan Fournier in the first round. He?s a good shooter and an underrated athlete who could see some minutes now that Rudy Fernandez is back in Spain. Second-rounder Quincy Miller (38th) is great as an off-the-dribble shooter, but is way too raw to see quality minutes as a 19-year-old one-and-done guy. 7?0? center/forward IzzetTurkyilmaz (50th) may remain in Europe. (B)

FREE AGENCY/TRADES ? The Nuggets didn?t do much lineup tinkering, with Randolph (FA from Minnesota) and Iguodala (four-way trade) the only veteran newcomers. Randolph is running out of chances, though a good part of his recent failures can be attributed to injury. Iguodala will make an immediate impact on defense, though we hope to see him regain some of that scoring touch. (B+)

SUMMARY ?Expect to see more Mile High running and gunning, albeit with stronger defense from this nearly-intact lineup. However, the Nuggets may still fall short of literally stealing the Thunder?s thunder and winning the division.

PROJECTION ? 2nd in Northwest

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

2011-12 RECORD ? 26-40

PROJECTED ROTATIONS:

  • 1st String ? Nikola Pekovic (C), Kevin Love (PF), Derrick Williams (SF), Brandon Roy (SG), Ricky Rubio (PG)
  • 2nd String ?Greg Stiemsma (C), Andrei Kirilenko (PF), Chase Budinger (SF), Alexey Shved (SG), J.J. Barea (PG)
  • 3rd String ? Louis Amundson (C), Dante Cunningham (PF), Malcolm Lee (SG), Luke Ridnour (PG)
  • Coaching staff ? Rick Adelman (HC), Terry Porter, Jack Sikma, T.R. Dunn, Bill Bayno (A)

LAST YEAR?S LEADERS:

Scoring ? Kevin Love (26.0)
Rebounding ?Love (13.3)
Assists ? Ricky Rubio (8.2)
Steals ? Rubio (2.2)
Blocks ? Anthony Randolph (1.0)
Minutes ? Love (39.0)

FRONTCOURT ? If Kevin Love could lead the Wolves to a winning season AND the Playoffs in 2012-13, the MVP award just might be his for the taking. He was arguably the best big man (four or five) in the NBA in 2011-12, and the scary part is that he just turned 24. He could easily be compiling 20-10 seasons for the next decade or so. And there doesn?t seem to be a thing he couldn?t do, except maybe block shots like the 6?10? player he is.

With the whole Michael Beasley saga done and over with, the starting small forward spot could go to last year?s second-overall pick, Derrick Williams. Williams was a mild disappointment as a rookie, with the usual flashes of brilliance and wild inconsistency one would expect from a first-year guy. He?s got the scoring ability, athleticism and talent to avoid the ?bust? tag ? it?s all up to him to make the most of those potentially increased minutes. If he continues to disappoint, the returning Andrei Kirilenko could start at the three. As he?s no longer the AK47 of old, he?ll likely serve as a backup at both forward spots, where his versatility will come in very handy. And let?s not forget Chase Budinger, the ex-Rocket with a dead eye from long range and above-average athleticism. He could be considered for a starting job at the three.

Nikola Pekovic, a revelation last year as a true starting center, provides everything you?d want in a seven-footer except defense. That said, he?s that rare type of center who can score on high-percentage shots, make free throws and help out on the boards. He?ll be backed up by ex-Boston Celtic Greg Stiemsma, who doesn?t do much except block shots and play defense. Fellow free agent signees Lou Amundson and Dante Cunningham add depth to the frontcourt, though their exposure may be limited to garbage time. (B+)

BACKCOURT ? Once the 2012-13 season starts, the Wolves? point guard rotation may look like this: Ridnour-Barea-Rubio (INJ). The order, however, may be reversed once Ricky Rubio?s ACL heals up. Before that season-ending injury, Rubio was a prime candidate for Rookie of the Year, with his exciting, yet effective playmaking abilities and pesky defense. Yes, he too can shoot quite well, but he?ll have to work on his shot selection, having shot at a woeful 36% clip from the field. In his absence, Luke Ridnour and J.J. Barea are the top contenders for the interim starting job. Ridnour may start early on due to his experience, but may find himself replaced by the similarly defensively-challenged Barea. Nonetheless, he?s more of a threat to explode on offense than Ridnour. Rookie Alexey Shved can also be used at the point; he?s a versatile 6?6? combo guard who turned a lot of heads with his performance with the Russian national team in the 2012 Olympics.

Comebacking Brandon Roy, whom we all though retired from pro ball last year at the tender age of 27, won?t be the All-Star shooting guard he was for the Blazers just a few years ago. Still, he and Shved are an instant upgrade over unexpected NBA Draft bust Wesley Johnson. Anything above 12 ppg in about 25-27 minutes a game would make for a successful comeback, considering how bad his knees were at the time of his retirement. Depth could be a concern, though, if Roy?s knees give in again. Aside from Shved, the only other possibilities at off-guard are Budinger and second-year man Malcolm Lee. (C+)

COACHING ? Rick Adelman is probably second to the legendary Lenny Wilkens when it comes to being a true ?player?s coach?, a man who earns his players? respect without having to scream, yell or cuss at them. And his version of the motion offense is tailor-made for the T-Wolves, a team that has one of the better-passing big men in the NBA in Kevin Love (though his assist numbers don?t always show it). (A-)

DRAFT ? It?s been a while since the Wolves finally paid their dues following the Joe Smith brouhaha, but during the 2012 Draft, it sure felt that way as Minnesota didn?t have a first-round pick. Their second-rounder, Purdue forward Robbie Hummel (58th), decided to play in Spain. He probably wouldn?t have made the team anyway. (D)

FREE AGENCY/TRADES ? Despite the criticism levied against Wolves owner Glen Taylor and GM David Kahn, management has been making the right moves as of late. Michael Beasley and the disappointing wing duo of Johnson and Martell Webster are gone, and Budinger, Kirilenko, Roy and Shved are in ? these are all solid citizens who can definitely contribute much more than the players the Wolves gave up via trade or free agency. And lest we forget, Cunningham, Stiemsma and Amundson are all capable of contributing defensively; though they?re slated for reserve roles, they could help Minnesota improve on ?D? as the team finished 25th in points allowed in 2011-12. (B+)

SUMMARY ? Poor defense is still the biggest concern in the Wolves? lineup, but as we just mentioned, they?re taking the right steps to improve in that department. Love will be a definite MVP candidate and Rubio?s return could yield immediate results, but for now, their best bet is to hope for the 8th seed in the 2012-13 Playoffs.

PROJECTION ? 3rd in Northwest

OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER

2011-12 RECORD ? 47-19

PROJECTED ROTATIONS:

  • 1st String ? Kendrick Perkins (C), Serge Ibaka (PF), Kevin Durant (SF), Thabo Sefolosha (SG), Russell Westbrook (PG)
  • 2nd String ?Cole Aldrich (C), Nick Collison (PF), Perry Jones (SF), James Harden (SG), Eric Maynor (PG)
  • 3rd String ? HasheemThabeet (C), Daniel Orton (C), Lazar Hayward (SF),Daequan Cook (SG), Reggie Jackson (SG)
  • Coaching staff ? Scott Brooks (HC), Mark Bryant, Maurice Cheeks, Rex Kalamian, Brian Keefe, MazTrakh (A)

LAST YEAR?S LEADERS:

Scoring ? Kevin Durant (28.0)
Rebounding ?Durant (8.0)
Assists ? Russell Westbrook (5.5)
Steals ? Westbrook (1.7)
Blocks ? Serge Ibaka (3.7)
Minutes ? Durant (38.6)

FRONTCOURT ? Let?s get the obvious out of the way ? Kevin Durant is a top candidate for MVP and the best small forward in the Western Conference. Though he failed to top his career high in scoring, he set new highs in field goal percentage (49.6%), rebounding (8.0 rpg), assists (3.5 apg) and blocks (1.2 bpg), and played even better in the Playoffs, even if it wasn?t quite enough to upset the Miami Heat. As long as he?s healthy, which he?s been for all but 14 games in his five-year career, the Thunder could find themselves in the thick of the Western Conference championship hunt. He?ll again be complemented by Serge Ibaka, who doesn?t score much (9.1 ppg in 27.2 mpg) but blocks a ton of shots ? his NBA-leading 3.7 per game helped him to a sure spot on the NBA All-Defensive First Team last season. His continued improvement is the reason Scott Brooks may want to play Ibaka more and Nick Collison less. Collison, a one-time lottery pick who has never averaged in double figures, is more of a role player than ever ? he?s a modern-day version of Adam Keefe (i.e. highly-touted college big man turned role playing reserve) with a much better shot selection. Rookie Perry Jones could see action at both forward spots with his tantalizing potential; apart from being a good athlete with decent shooting range, he handles the ball very well for someone 6?11?.

Kendrick Perkins will be the starting center by virtue of his defensive and rebounding ability alone. Though the Thunder placed 17th in points allowed per game (mostly a result of their up-tempo pace), they allowed opponents to shoot only 43% from the field, and it?s in large part due to Perkins and Ibaka?s effective defense in the paint. Now things may get a bit iffy when it comes to the backup five spot. Collison could play that part, with Jones as the reserve four and Lazar Hayward backing up Durant. But the more likely scenario here could be Cole Aldrich finally getting his shot as second-string center. It will be do-or-die time for the 11th pick in the 2010 Draft, as he still has that defensive potential and overlooked low-post game that could earn him some serious minutes. While the jury?s out on Aldrich as a draft bust, it?s long been in for former second-overall pick HasheemThabeet, who, together with Daniel Orton, may spend a lot of time languishing in the D-League. (A-)

BACKCOURT ? Hard to believe it, but Russell Westbrook was expected by many to be a defensive-oriented, pass-first point guard when he was drafted. That obviously didn?t quite happen, as Westbrook has long since emerged as one of the NBA?s best and most complete floor leaders, with a knack for getting to the hole and drawing shooting fouls. And he?s still a top-notch defender. All told, 2011-12 was arguably his best season ever. We say arguably because his assist numbers were down from 8.3 to 5.5 per game. Speaking of defense, Thabo Sefolosha does that quite well from the two-guard spot. His job is to shut down opposing gunners, hit a three every now and then, and make sure the water?s fine before being relieved by 2011-12 Sixth Man of the Year James Harden. Opponents had every reason to ?fear the beard? with Harden on the court ? he doesn?t have elite athleticism, but he plays smartly, takes good shots (career-high 49% FG shooting) and doesn?t have any glaring weakness.

The Thunder hope that Eric Maynor, who missed all but nine games last year with a torn ACL, will be healthy, as he?s been a reliable backup to Westbrook since joining the team midway through the 2009-10 season. Daequan Cook is also in the backcourt mix as a designated long-range bomber, as is Reggie Jackson, a second-year combo guard who shot just 32% in his rookie year. (A-)

COACHING ? Though Scott Brooks is definitely more intense than he was as a laid-back backup point guard in his playing days, he?s another one of those coaches who doesn?t need to rip into a player or act as a dictator to make his point. He?s still learning the finer points of the X?s and O?s side of things, but he deserves recognition for letting the Thunder run up the scoreboard while making sure the other side of the game isn?t neglected. (B+)

DRAFT ? The Thunder were extremely lucky to have Perry Jones III (28th) fall into their laps after being projected by many as a lottery pick, mid-first round at the lowest. Granted, his stock had fallen a bit in his sophomore year at Baylor, but he has the tools to succeed in the NBA. He should be a competent backup to Durant at the three, while playing PF or even center when the Thunder decide to play small-ball, which may be often. (A+)

FREE AGENCY/TRADES ? By adding lottery epic fail HasheemThabeet and Daniel Orton, the Thunder are hoping either young center would replace the contributions of free agent departure Nazr Mohammed. That doesn?t seem as possible with them as it is with Aldrich. (D)

SUMMARY ? If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it. This relatively unchanged Thunder lineup is a heads-on favorite to return to the Western Conference Finals, but they?re still young, and may have their work cut out for them against the vastly improved L.A. Lakers.

PROJECTION ? 1st in Northwest

PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS

2011-12 RECORD ? 28-38

PROJECTED ROTATIONS:

  • 1st String ? LaMarcus Aldridge (C), J.J. Hickson (PF), Nicolas Batum (SF), Wesley Matthews (SG), Damian Lillard (PG)
  • 2nd String ?Meyers Leonard (C), Joel Freeland (PF), Victor Claver (SF), Sasha Pavlovic (SG), Nolan Smith (PG)
  • 3rd String ?Luke Babbitt (PF), Jared Jeffries (SF), Will Barton (SG), Elliot Williams (SG), Ronnie Price (PG)
  • Coaching staff ? Terry Stotts (HC), Kaleb Canales, Kim Hughes, Dale Osbourne, Jay Triano, David Vanterpool (A)

LAST YEAR?S LEADERS:

Scoring ? LaMarcus Aldridge (21.7)
Rebounding ?Marcus Camby (8.9)
Assists ? Raymond Felton (6.5)
Steals ? Wesley Matthews (1.5)
Blocks ? Marcus Camby (1.4)*
Minutes ? Aldridge (36.3)

* - Traded in midseason

FRONTCOURT ? No question about it, this is LaMarcus Aldridge?s team now. And he might be forced to play center this time around, considering the fact J.J. Hickson only stands 6?9? and rookies Meyers Leonard and Joel Freeland are too raw to start. As a natural power forward with loads of agility and a great offensive game, he deserves to earn that long-overdue All-Star berth. Unfortunately, he?s the only All-Star caliber player the Blazers have. Hickson, who will likely be starting at power forward, seemed to be on the verge of putting it together when Aldridge went down with injury. He averaged 15.1 ppg and 8.3 rpg on 54% shooting after the Blazers picked him up on waivers. Then again, he was horrible as the Kings? backup four, bad enough for them to waive him right before Portland gave his NBA career a new lease on life. Hopefully he can find consistency in 2012-13. Leonard could eventually earn a starting job if Hickson reverts to his old ways. He moves very well for a man his size (7?1?-245) and can contribute on both ends.Freeland will finally be making his debut, six years after the Blazers drafted him in the tail end of the 2006 Draft. He?ll be a nice pick-and-pop player, much like Aldridge, but the English forward/center will need some time to acclimate himself to the NBA game.

The small forward position is all Nicolas Batum?s, as he continues to develop as a two-way threat on offense and defense. He?s also one of the more accurate three-point shooters in the NBA, with a 39% clip from last season. Batum will be backed up either by Luke Babbitt or 2009 first-rounder Victor Claver, who spent the last six years playing for Valencia in Spain?s Liga ACB. He?s an interesting prospect with above-average athleticism and a versatile offensive game, and could surprise a few by earning quality minutes. Babbitt got some playing time following Aldridge?s injury and can be a nice insurance policy at both forward positions. Journeyman Jared Jeffries can play and defend all three frontcourt positions, but aside from ?D? he offers little else. (C)

BACKCOURT ? The onus will be on a first-year player to guide the Blazers this 2012-13 season. Damian Lillard was considered the top point guard prospect in the 2012 Draft class, and with good reason. Though purely a shoot-first point guard at this point, he could possibly follow a similar career trajectory as the Warriors? Stephen Curry. His top backup will be second-generation pro Nolan Smith, another youngster who is still stuck at the role of ?tweener? guard. Ronnie Price will be the third-stringer, and may even be considered as the top reliever at point guard if Smith fails to progress.

The Blazers will need someone to step up big-time as the second option on offense. If Batum isn?t up to it and if Lillard experiences more rookie growing pains than expected, Wesley Matthews could be that player. Despite a slight uptick in minutes per game, Matthews regressed in his third NBA season. But he?ll be the starter by default, because like the point guard slot, there isn?t much depth at shooting guard. Sasha Pavlovic and second-rounder Will Barton are the top backcourt reserves; Pavlovic is coming off one of his least productive NBA seasons ever, a benchwarmer?s role with the Celtics. Experience, which is sorely lacking in the 2012-13 Blazers, will be his big edge. Barton has the makings of a draft sleeper, and has a similar skill set to Matthews except for his below-average outside shooting. (D)

COACHING ? Terry Stotts, who has a career NBA coaching record of 115-168, has never had a winning record as an NBA head coach. But somehow, his vision of an up-tempo game with lots of threes meshes with the lineup the Blazers currently have. He?s a skilled offensive coach who may yet again be thrown under the bus, as Portland is in full-on rebuilding mode with a very young lineup. (C+)

DRAFT ? The Blazers? 2012 crop of draftees couldn?t have been any better. Lillard (6th) is almost assured of a starting job at point guard. Leonard (11th) could earn himself a starting job, but that?s all dependent on how well Hickson plays ? will he be as good as he was in 19 games with the Blazers, or as bad as he was with the Kings earlier in the season? Barton (40th) is a quintessential ?energy guy? with a high motor and defensive potential. Freeland (30th, 2006) and Claver (22nd, 2009) will also make their NBA debuts after spending the past few years in the European circuit. (A+)

FREE AGENCY/TRADES ? Not much to see here. Jeffries, Pavlovic and Price are all career NBA reserves whose best asset for this young team is their experience.(D-)

SUMMARY ? Since Brandon Roy?s career-threatening injuries, the Blazers have quickly gone from perennial playoff contenders to one of the NBA?s youngest, least experienced and dare we say, weaker teams. As many as five rookies could be seeing extended playing time, and outside of Aldridge, there aren?t any true stars on this team. At least the lineup isn?t as troublesome on and off-court as those Jail Blazers of old.

PROJECTION ? 5th in Northwest

UTAH JAZZ

2011-12 RECORD ? 36-30

PROJECTED ROTATIONS:

  • 1st String ? Al Jefferson (C), Paul Millsap (PF), Gordon Hayward (SF), Randy Foye (SG), Mo Williams (PG)
  • 2nd String ?EnesKanter (C), Derrick Favors (PF), Marvin Williams (SF), Raja Bell (SG), Earl Watson (PG)
  • 3rd String ?Jeremy Evans (SF), DeMarre Carroll (SF), Alec Burks (SG), Kevin Murphy (SG), Jamaal Tinsley (PG)
  • Coaching staff ? Tyrone Corbin (HC), Jeff Hornacek, Sidney Lowe, Mike Sanders (A)

LAST YEAR?S LEADERS:

Scoring ? Al Jefferson (19.2)
Rebounding ? Jefferson (9.6)
Assists ? Devin Harris (5.0)
Steals ? Paul Millsap (1.8)
Blocks ? Jefferson (1.7)
Minutes ? Jefferson (34.0)

FRONTCOURT ? The Jazz are in a bit of a conundrum. A quandary. A dilemma. Derrick Favors and EnesKanter are two former third-overall picks who can play forward and center and play it quite well if given the chance. However, they don?t get too many chances behind Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap. At one point or another, either Favors or Kantercould complain about a lack of minutes, and one of them may have to be traded. So far that hasn?t happened, but it just might, because they?re too good to be the usual backups to two relatively young and talented frontcourt men. Moving on to the starting big men, Jefferson is a rarity, one of those few centers who can hit at least 50% from the field and 75% from the line. He can haul down the boards and block some shots. But even if he?s an above average shot blocker, Jefferson can stand to improve on ?D.? That?s where Favors would come in. And defense is one of those things Millsap does quite well; like Jefferson, he?ll make his field goals and free throws and fight on the boards. Expect another solid season from him as second or third offensive option.

While Al Jeff and Millsap are locked in as starters at center and PF, starting small forward is up for grabs between Gordon Hayward and Marvin Williams. Hayward has youth, work ethic and a good shooting stroke on his side as he competes with Williams, who?s the better athlete but a huge disappointment as a one-time second-overall pick. DeMarre Carroll and Jeremy Evans are also options at small forward, but don?t expect to see big minutes from them if everyone?s healthy. (B+)

BACKCOURT ? By returning to the team that had picked him in the second round of the 2003 Draft, Mo Williams hopes to recapture his old form, though asking for another All-Star caliber season like 2009 may be too much to ask. He?s more of a shoot-first playmaker and doesn?t play much defense, but he should be less trouble for the Jazz than the extremely disappointing Devin Harris. Earl Watson will reprise his backup PG role, and that?s where the ?D? and pure playmaking would come in. His abysmal 34% field goal percentage doesn?t hurt the Jazz much because he hardly shoots anyway.Once-promising PG Jamaal Tinsley and rookie Kevin Murphy, a shooting guard, will battle for a third-string spot.

The Jazz?s shooting guard depth chart is mostly made up of a hodgepodge of players who are best suited as reserves on most other teams ? Randy Foye, Raja Bell and Alec Burks. Foye is best used as a three-point specialist at this point in his career, albeit one you could leave on the court for about 20-25 minutes a game. Bell is a combo long-range bomber/defensive specialist who just turned 36 and is a bit past his prime. Burks is the exact opposite ? a second-year scoring machine who gets most of his points as a slasher but needs work on the other end of the floor. Don?t be surprised if the Jazz go big with a starting lineup of Mo Williams and Hayward at guard, Millsap and Favors at forward and Jefferson at center. That?s how slim the pickings are at the two-guard spot. (D)

COACHING ? In his first full year as head coach, Ty Corbin eschewed the conservative offense of his predecessor Jerry Sloan and had the Jazz running and shooting en route to 99.7 ppg, good for fourth in the league. He?ll have to get his players to focus more on defense (99.0 ppg allowed, 23rd in 2011-12), which ideally won?t be a problem, as Corbin was known as a hustle player and scrappy defender in his playing days. (C)

DRAFT ? Kevin Murphy (47th) was the Jazz?s only pick in the 2012 Draft out of Tennessee Tech. A 6?6? shooting guard who emerged from mid-major obscurity with a strong performance at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, Murphy has a solid chance of making the roster with his scoring and shooting skills. (C)

FREE AGENCY/TRADES ? Former Clippers Mo Williams and Randy Foye will provide immediate help to a weak backcourt that was once helmed by Devin Harris, whose slide from All-Star caliber to mediocrity continues to befuddle pundits. Harris was traded to Atlanta for Marvin Williams, another player who?s dashed his share of hopes and expectations. He?s not a bad player by any stretch, just one who should?ve done more considering his lofty draft status. (B-)

SUMMARY ?The Jazz are at a point where they?re practically running in place, fighting for the final playoff berth but not getting significantly better nor worse. If Minnesota?s Ricky Rubio is out longer than expected, Utah might get that eighth Western Conference playoff berth once again. However, it looks like the Jazz might miss the 2012-13 Playoffs by a hair with their current lineup.
