Azealia Banks Dropping 1991 EP In April

GQ gives Harlem MC a splashy look in next month's Style issue, where Banks talks meeting Kanye and getting money.
By Rebecca Thomas

Don't be fooled by her Twitter tussles with rap vets: Azealia Banks is on her grind. The Harlem MC didn't let expulsion from this year's XXL Freshman Class keep her down. Instead, she's kept up her buzz up, at a noise level guaranteed to pick up a few decibels when she drops a new EP next month.

Banks confirmed via tweet this week that 1991 is due April 17 and will include the title track, plus "Grand Prix." The project's title is a nod to the year that gave us seminal albums like Nirvana's Nevermind, and artists like the 20-year-old Banks.

As for sonic expectations, we're hoping her brand-new "F--- Up the Fun" is a hint at what's to come. On the Diplo-produced number, the "212" rapper channels another New York femcee — Bedford-Stuyvesant's Foxy Brown — spitting rapid-fire over a relentless bass line. (Still no word on the whereabouts of her promised 212 EP, though, as Pitchfork pointed out.)

And while Banks took issue with fellow upstart Iggy Azalea landing a prime spot on the aforementioned XXL cover, the Aussie rapper can't yet claim a full page in men's bible GQ. The potty-mouthed Yung Rapunzel gets glossy revenge in the magazine's April "Style" issue, where they styled the cocoa beauty in a striped tank and petal-shaped yellow shorts; her smile is sly and her locks wind-blown.

After breaking through on last fall's viral smash "212," Banks is at work on her Interscope debut, due in September. She's tapped A-list U.K. producer Paul Epworth (Florence and the Machine, Foster the People) for an assist on Broke With Expensive Taste. In the accompanying GQ interview, Azealia spouts off about being an Internet sensation, Kanye West and who inspires her musically ("Azealia Banks") — all with that unmistakable Uptown 'tude.

"It's cool," she says of meeting bold-face fans like Yeezy. "But they're just people. The skies don't part and glow orange." Are you looking forward to Azealia's EP? Tell us in the comments!

Obama to Russia: More flexibility after elections

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? President Barack Obama told Russia's leader Monday that he would have more flexibility after the November election to deal with the contentious issue of missile defense, a candid assessment of political reality that was picked up by a microphone without either leader apparently knowing.

Obama's Republican opponents pounced on the comment, saying the president has a hidden agenda that could include concessions to the Russians if he is re-elected this fall.

"This is my last election," Obama is heard telling outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. "After my election, I have more flexibility."

Medvedev replied in English, according to a tape by ABC News: "I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir," an apparent reference to incoming President Vladmir Putin.

Obama and Medvedev did not intend for their comments, made during a meeting in Seoul, South Korea, to be made public.

Once they were, the White House said Obama's words reflected the reality that domestic political concerns in both the U.S. and Russia this year would make it difficult to fully address their long-standing differences over the contentious issue of missile defense. Obama, should he win re-election, would not have to face voters again.

"Since 2012 is an election year in both countries, with an election and leadership transition in Russia and an election in the United States, it is clearly not a year in which we are going to achieve a breakthrough," White House deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said.

Obama's candid remarks Monday illustrated the political constraints that hem in any president who is running for re-election and dealing with a congressional chamber ? in this case, the House ? controlled by the rival party. Republicans have fought Obama fiercely on health care, taxes and other issues. They are eager to deny him any political victories in a season in which they feel the White House is within reach, although Obama's remarks suggested he feels good about his re-election prospects.

Even if Obama was confiding a political reality in a supposedly private moment, the comments gave the GOP new openings to question his sincerity and long-range plans.

Mitt Romney, the leading Republican contender to face Obama this fall, told a San Diego audience the unguarded comments were "an alarming and troubling development."

"This is no time for our president to be pulling his punches with the American people, and not telling us what he's intending to do with regards to our missile defense system, with regards to our military might and with regards to our commitment to Israel," Romney said.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor who often faces charges of having been flexible on his own policies over the years, also issued a statement saying Obama "needs to level with the American public about his real agenda."

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said Romney "is undermining his credibility by distorting the president's words."

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich also questioned Obama's motives.

"I'm curious, how many other countries has the president promised that he'd have a lot more flexibility the morning he doesn't have to answer to the American people?" Gingrich said on CNN.

Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio, Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, wrote to the president requesting an "urgent explanation of (his) comments." Turner said Congress "has made exquisitely clear to your administration and to other nations that it will block all attempts to weaken U.S. missile defenses."

The Republicans' sharp remarks underscore increased willingness of politicians to criticize a president on a foreign trip. The old adage "politics ends at the water's edge" is a casualty of the nation's heightened partisanship in recent decades.

Tensions over missile defense have threatened to upend the overall thawing of relations between the U.S. and Russia in recent years.

Both leaders acknowledged as much in their public statements to reporters following their meeting. Obama said there was "more work to do" to bridge their differences. Medvedev said each country had its own position on missile defense but there was still time to find a solution.

Congress, as part of the fiscal 2012 defense authorization act, constrained Obama's ability to share classified U.S. missile defense information with Russia. Obama signed that legislation into law.

Russia has strongly criticized plans for a U.S.-led NATO missile defense in Europe. Russian officials believe the planned missile shield would target Russia's nuclear deterrent and undermine global stability. The U.S. says the planned missile shield is intended to counter threats from Iran.

Putin said earlier this month that Washington's refusal to offer Moscow written guarantees that its missile defense system would not be aimed against Russia deepened its concerns. Putin won elections earlier this year and will return to the presidency later this spring. He is expected to name Medvedev prime minister.

The United States and Russia have also clashed recently over their approach to dealing with violence in Syria. The U.S. has sharply criticized Russia for opposing U.N. Security Council action calling on Syria's president to leave power.

Obama said Monday that despite past differences on Syria, he and Medvedev agreed they both support U.N. envoy Kofi Annan's efforts to end the violence in Syria and move the country toward a "legitimate" government.

Cars I've Loved and Hated ? Michael Lamm's Unauthorized Auto ...

This is pretty much what the 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook convertible looked like when Mike bought it in 1975 for $150. The front end had lost a battle with a lamp post, but the car was sound otherwise. Text and photos copyright Michael Lamm 2012

I occasionally tuck my business card under the wiper blade of a car I?d like to buy. On the back of the card, I?ll scribble something like, ?When you get ready to sell this car, please give me first dibs. Hang onto this card.?

Over the years, I?ve had three owners respond, one of whom was a little old lady here in Stockton. She?d bought a cranberry-colored 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook convertible new, and she?d taken meticulously good care of it until her nephew challenged a lamp pole at a local mall parking lot.

I?d left my card on her windshield five years earlier, in 1970. Ordinarily, I wouldn?t have given a 1953 Plymouth a second thought, but this convertible was so nice. It had the continental kit and just about every other option and accessory available that year, so I thought, What the heck; I?ll leave my card. Can?t hurt.

Nothing for five years, and then one Sunday morning in 1975, she called. ?Do you remember that Plymouth convertible you left your card on some years back?? (No.) ?Well, you wanted to buy the car back then, and now I?m ready to sell it, but there?s a slight problem. The car hit a lamp pole and crumpled the front end. Would you still be interested??

I wasn?t sure, so I drove over to her house and surveyed the damage. Not too bad, actually ? a U-shaped front bumper, bumper pan, grille, bent fan, nice-sized hole in the back of the radiator, klooged hood and creased front fenders, but no structural damage, and the rest of the car looked great, including the top and original interior.

?How much?? I asked.

?Make it $150 and she?s yours,? the woman responded.

No problem. I wrote her a check. When I asked for background on the car itself, she told me she?d been a cashier for the local Chrysler-Plymouth dealer. This convertible stood in the showroom for most of 1953, and it?s the car customers would sit in before they decided to buy more plebeian Plymouths.

When the 1954 models arrived, her boss offered to let her buy the car as a used demo, so she did, and it was only because her loutish nephew had had it out with the pole that she was letting it go at all. She loved the car, but realized it would cost too much to have it straightened and repainted.

Lamm and his teenaged sons removed the bent sheetmetal, and Mike advertised for a parts car in the local newspaper. With the engine so accessible, he popped in new freeze plugs, then began bolting on ?new? bits from the parts car.

I took the car home, and my youngest son, John, helped me strip off the bent parts. I then put a want ad in our local newspaper asking if anyone had a 1953 Plymouth parts car. Sure enough, a nice Cranbrook coupe showed up, and I bought it for $200.

Mike and sons stripped off all trim, lamps, handles, badges, etc., and block sanded the body to bare metal.

I swapped out everything the convertible needed ? bumper, pan, grille, fenders, hood, radiator, fan, etc. ? but I didn?t reassemble the car right away, because I wanted to get it painted. In fact, I removed all the rest of the trim, lights, handles, etc., and my kids and I wet-sanded the body pretty much to bare metal. We?d do that occasionally when the boys were teenagers. They could pick up some extra bucks, and I?d get the car sanded in a day or two.

Stockton bodyman and customizer, Bob Wade, painted the Cranbrook in the original cranberry red. Total tab for paint and labor came to $379.39.

I then drove the peeled Plymouth over to Bob Wade, my favorite bodyman at the time, and he shot the car in the original cranberry. Came out great! Bob charged me $379.39 (I kept all the receipts, as I?ve done with most of my cars over the past half century), and I sold what was left of the parts car for $35.

After the respray, I put on a set of new tires, went totally through the brakes, bought a new battery, installed seat covers and had a few parts replated. I also replaced most of the weather stripping and rubber seals, the carpets front and rear and the plastic rear window. The rest of the top was fine, as was the hydraulic system to raise and lower it. By 1978, I had about $1,000 in the car.

Mike?s eldest son, Robert, drove the Plymouth during his senior year of high school. In all, Mike kept this car for four years, but others played through at the same time.

Our eldest son, Robert, was entering his senior year of high school, and he asked if he could borrow one of the several hobby cars I had at the time. Which one, I asked. Well, the Plymouth would be nice. I said sure, he was welcome to borrow it, but he?d have to pay that year?s DMV fee ($9), his own insurance and any incidentals. He agreed, and he drove the Plymouth daily until he went away to college.

One afternoon, though, as he was exiting the freeway on his way home from school, he heard a loud ?pop? and felt the front end mysteriously settle. Turned out the front swaybar had snapped, perhaps as a delayed result of hitting the lamp pole. Or just plain metal fatigue.

Mike?s friend, Mike Liddiard, parked his lift on the Lamms? property for about 17 years. When Liddiard moved to a new house, he retrieved the lift, and Lamm ordered a replacement the next day. Here Lamm?s replacing the snapped front sway bar on Liddiard?s lift.

That?s the Lamms? youngest son, John (?Jay?), sitting on the back bumper. He now owns and operates the 24 Hours of LeMons race series. In 1979, Mike traded the Plymouth in on a 1952 Nash-Healey roadster, the subject of his next chapter.

I replaced the sway bar and put an ad in Hemmings to sell the car. Got an almost immediate response from a Mopar collector in Sebastopol, about 140 miles northwest of here, asking if I?d like to swap the Plymouth plus cash for a 1952 Nash-Healey roadster he owned. I drove up to Sebastopol. The Nash-Healey needed work, but was basically quite decent. The Mopar man and I struck a deal, and I?ll tell you all about that in the next chapter.

James Cameron reaches deepest spot on Earth

(AP) ? Hollywood icon James Cameron has made it to Earth's deepest point.

The director of "Titanic," ''Avatar" and other films used a specially designed submarine to dive nearly seven miles, completing his journey a little before 8 a.m. Monday local time, according to Stephanie Montgomery of the National Geographic Society.

He plans to spend about six hours exploring and filming the Mariana Trench, about 200 miles southwest of the Pacific island of Guam.

"All systems OK," were Cameron's first words upon reaching the bottom, according to a statement. His arrival at a depth of 35,756 feet came early Sunday evening on the U.S. East Coast, after a descent that took more than two hours.

The scale of the trench is hard to grasp ? it's 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon and more than a mile deeper than Mount Everest is tall.

Cameron made the dive aboard his 12-ton, lime-green sub called "Deepsea Challenger." He planned to collect samples for biologists and geologists to study.

"It's really the first time that human eyes have had an opportunity to gaze upon what is a very alien landscape," said Terry Garcia, the National Geographic Society's executive VP for mission programs, via phone from Pitlochry, Scotland.

The first and only time anyone dove to these depths was in 1960. Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh took nearly five hours to reach the bottom and stayed just 20 minutes. They had little to report on what they saw, however, because their submarine kicked up so much sand from the ocean floor.

"He is going to be seeing something that none of us have ever seen before. He is going to be opening new worlds to scientists," Garcia said.

One of the risks of a dive so deep is extreme water pressure. At 6.8 miles below the surface, the pressure is the equivalent of three SUVs sitting on your toe.

Cameron told The Associated Press in an interview after a 5.1 mile-deep practice run near Papua New Guinea earlier this month that the pressure "is in the back of your mind." The submarine would implode in an instant if it leaked, he said.

But while he was a little apprehensive beforehand, he wasn't scared or nervous while underwater.

"When you are actually on the dive you have to trust the engineering was done right," he said.

The film director has been an oceanography enthusiast since childhood and has made 72 deep-sea submersible dives. Thirty-three of those dives have been to the wreckage of the Titanic, the subject of his 1997 hit film.

Climate Law Blog ? Blog Archive ? GE Wins $170 Million Verdict in ...

By Julia Ciardullo
Fellow

This is the second in a series of blogs that will discuss some of the most notable recent legal developments in the field of intellectual property law and green technology.? In a prior post, we discussed the expiration of the USPTO?s Green Technology Pilot Program and the enactment of the America Invents Act.? This post will discuss the latest developments in a series of pending patent infringement cases between General Electric Co. (?GE?) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (?MHI?) and its US subsidiaries (collectively, ?Mitsubishi?) in what has shaped up to be a battle for control of the multi-billion dollar US wind turbine market.

International Trade Commission Investigation

On February 27, 2008, GE initiated an investigation with the International Trade Commission (?ITC?) (Investigation No. 337-TA-641), alleging that Mitsubishi?s variable speed wind turbines infringed three of GE?s patents.??On March 2, 2010, the ITC concluded that Mitsubishi was not in violation of Section 337 of the Tariff Act and declined to issue an injunction banning importation of Mitsubishi wind turbines.??GE appealed to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.? On February 29, 2012, the Federal Circuit affirmed the ITC?s determination that Mitsubishi was not in violation as to one of GE?s patents, but remanded to the ITC for a determination as to whether the second of GE?s patents was valid and infringed by Mitsubishi (the third patent had expired prior to the Federal Circuit?s decision), leaving open the possibility of a victory for GE before the ITC.? (Fed. Cir. Case No. 2010-1223). ?The Federal Circuit decision can be found here.

District Court Litigations

Other wind turbine patent litigations between GE and MHI remain pending in several district courts around the US.? Most notably, on March 8, 2012, a jury in the Northern District of Texas awarded GE $170 million in damages based on alleged infringement by Mitsubishi of a GE patent relating to wind turbine electrical power regulation systems.??(Case No. 3:10-cv-00276, filed February 11, 2010).??The jury verdict can be found here.? The judge has not yet issued a final order in the case.

In an earlier case, GE filed suit in the Southern District of Texas alleging infringement by Mitsubishi of several GE patents on variable speed wind turbine control systems.??(Case No. 2:09-cv-00229, filed September 3, 2009).??The case is currently stayed pending final resolution of the ITC action.

MHI filed its own suit against GE in the Middle District of Florida alleging infringement of MHI?s patent on systems that control the pitch angle of wind turbine blades.??(Case No. 6:10-cv-00812, filed May 20, 2010).??Summary judgment arguments are currently being heard in the case.

MHI also filed an antitrust lawsuit against GE in the Western District of Arkansas alleging that GE?s variable speed wind turbine patents were fraudulently procured and that GE?s efforts to enforce them against MHI constitute an anticompetitive scheme that has cost MHI billions of dollars.??(Case No. 5:10-cv-05087, filed May 20, 2010).??On August 23, 2010, the court ordered a stay of the case until final resolution of GE?s pending infringement suits, explaining that GE victories in those cases would moot MHI?s antitrust claims.

A discussion of other major pending litigations concerning solar, biofuels and other green technology patents will be the subject of a future blog post.

Dwyane Wade Buzzer Beater: Heat Top Pacers 93-91 In OT (VIDEO)

MIAMI -- Dwyane Wade's jumper with 0.1 seconds left in overtime gave Miami a 93-91 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night, extending the Heat home-court winning streak to 12 games.

Wade scored 28 points and LeBron James led two late comebacks by Miami, finishing with 27 for the Heat. James helped force regulation by hitting a game-tying 3-pointer with 10.2 seconds left in regulation, then not allowing Indiana's Darren Collison to get a potential game-winning shot off at the other end.

Danny Granger's runner with 2:01 left in the extra session gave Indiana a 91-86 lead. The Pacers didn't score again, getting outscored 7-0 the rest of the way.

Chris Bosh scored 13 for the Heat. Granger led the Pacers with 19 points.

James made another 3-pointer in overtime to start Miami's rally, Bosh tied it with a jumper with 1:03 left to play, and an offensive rebound gave Miami the ball and a chance to take the last shot of the extra period.

Wade waited, waited, waited ? then delivered. Moments after the final buzzer, most of the power in AmericanAirlines Arena was gone.

Good timing. It was finally over.

David West finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Indiana, which got 14 points from Darren Collison and 12 from Paul George.

Over the last 101 minutes of play, spanning three games, Miami had gone 1 for 21 from 3-point range. But James coolly drilled one from the right corner with 10.2 seconds left, tying the game at 85.

As if that wasn't enough, James delivered on defense to end regulation, not even allowing Collison to make a pass, much less a potentially winning shot, and to overtime they went.

Miami lost reserve swingman Mike Miller with 5:05 left in the first half. He jumped to contest a pass by Collison, his left leg landing on the back of Bosh's foot. Miller fell to the court, and when he got up he immediately hopped up the tunnel that leads to the Heat locker room, not stopping at the bench or putting any weight on his left leg.

Miller was diagnosed with a sprained ankle. X-rays showed no break, and he did not return.

This season's first two Miami-Indiana meetings were over at halftime, with the Heat leading 62-39 in Miami on Jan. 4, then 68-39 in Indianapolis on Feb. 14 when they completed their three-wins-in-three-nights road stretch.

Someone had 39 at halftime again in this one, and it wasn't Indiana.

The Pacers led by as many as 14 in the first half, taking a 44-39 edge. Miami was 0 for 7 from the floor with four consecutive turnovers during one stretch, scoring only three points in 8 minutes.

Wade was 8 for 11 for 22 points for Miami, the third time he's scored that many in a first half this season. The rest of the Heat went 7 for 24 in the half, combining for 17 points. James had six at the break, matching his third-lowest-scoring regular season first half since joining Miami.

Neither team led by more than four points in the third quarter, a period with eight lead changes, five ties and a slew of missed shots. Miami shot 39 percent in the quarter, Indiana just 30 percent. Both teams warmed in the fourth, Miami connecting on 67 percent from the floor ? and needing all of that ? while Indiana climbed to 44 percent in the final 12 minutes of regulation.

The Heat were without assistant coach Bob McAdoo, the Hall of Fame player who missed the game with deep vein thrombosis, or blood clots that form deep in leg veins. Assistant coach Keith Askins, typically one row behind the Heat bench during games, sat in McAdoo's usual spot.

NOTES: World No. 1 golfer Rory McIlroy sat opposite the Heat bench. ... Granger missed about 3 minutes of the fourth quarter after banging his right hand while charging into Udonis Haslem. ... Referee Tre Maddox took a tumble over some courtside photographers in the first quarter, then made a call before getting to his feet.

(AP) ? Red Cross teams began handing out food and blankets in central Homs province on Sunday after days of delays, helping families who fled the besieged neighborhood of Baba Amr and took shelter in nearby villages.

Government forces have blocked humanitarian access to Baba Amr since Friday, the day after troops seized it from rebels, and it remained blocked on Sunday. Opposition fighters had been in control of the neighborhood for several months, and a regime offensive on Homs that began in early February aimed to retake rebel-held neighborhoods inside the city.

Government forces managed to retake Baba Amr after nearly a month of intense and relentless shelling and activists say hundreds were killed in the daily bombardments that led up to the final battle on Thursday. Some Baba Amr residents died when, in desperation, they dared to venture out of their homes to forage for food.

Activists have said residents face a humanitarian catastrophe in Baba Amr and other parts of Homs, Syria's third-largest city with a population of one million. Electricity, water and communications have been cut off in frigid temperatures; food was running low and many are too scared to venture out.

The government had said it would allow the Red Cross into Baba Amr on Friday but then blocked their access for days, citing security concerns. But in the meantime, activists accused Syrian forces of killing tens of residents execution-style and burning homes in revenge attacks against those believed to be supporting the rebels.

As the brutal siege of Homs dragged on, Western pressure on President Bashar Assad intensified. The U.S. has called for Assad to step down and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said he could be considered a war criminal. The European Union committed itself to document war crimes in Syria to set the stage for a "day of reckoning" for the country's leadership, in the way that former Yugoslav leaders were tried for war crimes in the 1990s by a special U.N. tribunal.

While they continue to appeal for unfettered access to Homs, Red Cross workers were focusing on distributing aid in the village of Abel, about two miles (three kilometers) from Homs, and the Inshaat and Tawzii districts of Homs.

"The needs are so far mainly in the forms of food and also blankets because of the cold," ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan said in Geneva.

Homs has emerged as a central battleground in the conflict, which started last March with protests calling for the ouster of authoritarian President Bashar Assad in some of the country's impoverished hinterlands.

The protests spread as the government waged a bloody crackdown on dissent, and many in the opposition have taken up arms to defend themselves and attack government troops. The U.N. says more than 7,500 people have been killed in the uprising.

Syrian activists said more than a dozen artillery shells struck the town of Rastan, near Homs, killing at least three people and wounding others.

Syrian activists also reported clashes between rebel fighters and government troops in the northern Idlib province. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said one soldier was killed and that the army was raiding homes in nearby villages following the rebel capture of an intelligence officer.

Also Sunday, Syrian ally China offered a proposal to end the violence, calling for an immediate cease-fire and talks by all parties. But it stood firm in its opposition to foreign intervention.

The proposal, posted on the Foreign Ministry's website, describes the situation in Syria as "grave" and calls for an immediate end to all violence as well as humanitarian relief and negotiations mediated by the U.N. and the Arab League.

But it rejects outside interference, sanctions and attempts at regime change.

"We oppose anyone interfering in Syria's internal affairs under the pretext of 'humanitarian' issues," the proposal said. "China does not approve of armed interference or pushing for 'regime change' in Syria and believes that use or threat of sanctions does not help to resolve the issue."

As international pressure against Assad's regime has grown, China and Russia have protected it from censure in the U.N. Security Council.

Beijing is usually reluctant to authorize sanctions or intervention against another country, fearing the precedent may one day be used against China's own authoritarian government.

[unable to retrieve full-text content]LiveScience.com - When Hector Siliezar visited the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza with his wife and kids in 2009, he snapped three iPhone photos of El Castillo, a pyramid that once served as a sacred temple to the Mayan god Kukulkan. A thunderstorm was brewing near the temple, and Siliezar was trying to capture lightning crackling dramatically over the ruins.
