The incident happened in Dongxing city in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a southern Chinese city bordering Vietnam.
Postings on the Internet have confirmed the riots, which occurred on Friday after protests broke out against excessive brutality meted out by security forces to a suspected smuggler.
The rioting erupted after anti-smuggling police crashed a vehicle into a motorcycle being ridden by the man.
Internet postings said thousands of rioters had been involved in battling policemen attached to the local anti-smuggling unit.
AFP reported security bureau information that while no rioters were injured or killed, five policemen had been slightly injured and some anti-smuggling vehicles had been damaged.
But information from the Hong Kong-based Centre for Human Rights and Democracy said as many as 10,000 people had joined in the rioting in which customs vehicles were smashed or burned and up to 100 people were killed or injured.
