EKTherapies - Hypnotherapy, CBT & NLP: Pride

The Olympics are here. Love it or hate it, the 2012 Olympics have arrived in the UK. As with any event which has had such a build-up, there was a lot of scepticism amid fears of how the event would represent the country and affect the people living alongside it.

If you managed to watch the opening ceremony I am sure you will agree that Danny Boyle?s celebration of Britain, and interpretation of what it means to be British, was absolutely fantastic. A great combination of eccentricity, inventiveness, talent and of course humour, with Mr Bean, James Bond and even The Queen making an appearance. How many countries have a Queen that in her Diamond Jubilee year, who has carried herself through her whole carrier with dignity and pride always representing Britain to the best she can, would join in the celebrations by acting alongside Daniel Craig and ?jumping out of a plane?. What a lady !

Even before Friday the buzz in London and the rest of Great Britain has been electric. People are proudly supporting their country and willing their athletes to perform and win gold. It?s fantastic that yet again this year, people of all backgrounds come together in unity and share that same sense of pride.

Hypnotherapy, CBT & NLP can help you to have that same pride and self-worth helping you to achieve your goals in a positive and focused way.

Personally I feel very proud to be British and to cheer on such superb athletes from all around the world. Enjoy the wonderful Olympic buzz that is in the air as Great Britain shows just what an amazing show it can put on when we all pull together.

Does Walesa Embrace of Romney Mean Poland Dislikes Obama?

When President Obama visited Poland last year, Prime Minister Donald Tusk told his American guest, "We feel that you are one of us."

He didn't go as far today, at least not publicly, following a meeting with Mitt Romney. But former Polish president Lech Walesa, a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, did give his seal of approval to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

"I wish you to be successful because this success is needed to the United States, of course, but to Europe and the rest of the world, too," Walesa said through a translator. "Gov. Romney, get your success. Be successful!"

The endorsement of a U.S. presidential challenger, unusual in its boldness, was particularly eyebrow-raising in light of Walesa's refusal to meet with Obama on his visit to Poland one year ago.

Walesa, the former leader of the Solidarity movement that helped bring down communism in Poland, cited scheduling conflicts at the time for why the two could not meet, though Walesa's absence was widely interpreted in local news reports as a snub.

So what impact will Walesa's embrace of Romney have on the 2012 presidential race? Little, experts say, although it does symbolize a real sense of discontentment among many Poles and Polish-Americans over Obama's handling of the bilateral alliance during his term.

"This is a powerful statement on Polish relations with the U.S. right now," Alex Storozynski, president of the Kosciuszko Foundation, a nonpartisan Polish educational and cultural group, said of the Walesa endorsement. "Poles in Poland are frustrated with the Obama administration."

Tops among the frustrations is an unfulfilled Obama promise from 2008 to add Poland to a list of visa waiver countries, a move that would allow freer flow of travel to and from the U.S. for families, business people and tourists.

Some Poles are also miffed by Obama's "reset" policy with Russia, a longtime Polish nemesis, and his backing away from parts of a George W. Bush-era missile defense plan.

"They had courageously agreed to provide sites for our anti-missile systems, only to be told, at the last hour, that the agreement was off. As part of the so-called reset in policy, missile defenses were sacrificed as a unilateral concession to the Russian government," Romney said of the Poles at a VFW convention in Reno last week.

President Obama also recently angered some Poles and Polish-Americans when he referred to "a Polish death camp" - as opposed to a Nazi death camp in German-occupied Poland - during remarks at the White House in May. The gaffe drew swift and stern public rebukes from Polish leaders that later led to a letter of regret from Obama to Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.

"If he was 'one of us' he'd know that Germans did build those camps," Storozynski said.

Still, there is ample evidence U.S.-Polish ties, particularly military, remain strong and that Walesa's endorsement carries little sway.

Obama approved steps to assign a U.S. Air Force contingent to Poland beginning in 2013 as part of the NATO alliance. And both countries' military leaders say they have close working relationships. (Defense Secretary Leon Panetta hosted the Polish Defense Minister last week in Washington.)

"Walesa is probably Poland's best international statesman, not because he's right, not because he knows what he's talking about, but because of an aura of credibility from his past and the Nobel Prize. In many ways, he has more stature overseas than at home," said John Micgiel, director of the East Central European Center at Columbia University.

"But what Mr. Walesa says doesn't carry a lot of weight with Poles or Polish-Americans. He thinks differently than most people," he said.

Solidarity, the trade union group Walesa once led, disassociated itself from his comments today, saying in a statement that "Mitt Romney supported attacks on trade unions and employees' rights."

"Solidarity was not involved in organizing Romney's meeting with Walesa and did not invite him to visit Poland," the group said.

What does all of this mean for U.S. voters of Polish descent?

"They don't see Obama as their candidate, or Mitt Romney as their candidate," Micgiel said. "They are truly swing votes."

BMW i8

Green Car Reports - July 30, 0012

Along with launch?ing an all new car series ? the elec?tric i cars brand, BMW is try?ing some?thing else out for the first time. The Ger?man automaker is bypass?ing dealer chan?nels and going direct to buy?ers over the inter?net. It?s going to take a few years for the i3 and i8 to go main?stream in Euro?pean mar?kets, but this is the chan?nel that will be uti?lized, along with a spe?cial?ized bou?tique show?room in London.

This mar?ket chan?nel will be sup?ported by a roam?ing sales force and lim?ited show?room net?work ? enough to offer test dri?ves and face-to-face con?tact with spe?cial?ists who knows every?thing that will be asked about these EVs. Sales will be lim?ited, so expenses will be reduced using the inter?net and tar?geted sales team. It?s sim?i?lar to what Tesla Motors is doing with the Road?ster and Model S ? hav?ing a few ded?i?cated show?rooms with a lot of hands on, per?son?al?ized sales expe?ri?ence, and with much of the process hap?pen?ing on the internet.

Database tracks every bomb dropped by U.S. since WWI

A U.S. Air Force plane drops munitions. (Department of Defense/AP)Lieutenant Colonel Jenns Robertson, 45, has spent the past six years working on one of the most unusual historical projects in modern times: compiling a database of every bomb dropped by U.S. forces dating back to World War I.

"It has proven useful in the real world, in real time," Robertson told the Boston Globe. "You can pick any place you want and look at it in detail."

The project is called THOR: Theater History of Operations Reports and allows people to use their computers to literally point and click to nearly any location on the globe and receive a near-instantaneous assessment of when and where U.S. bombs were dropped over the past century.

Beyond the fascinating historical implications, Robertson's bomb project is being used by the U.S. and other countries to save lives. In places like German, Vietnam and Iraq, the database is being examined to identify locations where there may still be unexploded ordinance.

Working from Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, Robertson has been working full-time on what started out as something of a hobby, combing through thousands upon thousands of documents.

For examples, the Globe notes that Robertson has discovered about 1,000 original World War I raid reports, all entered by hand.

And with each subsequent war, the sheer volume of documents continues to grow. For World War II alone, Robertson has scanned a reported 10,000 handwritten and typed pages of bombing records.

For the Vietnam War alone, Robertson has examined records showing that from October 1965 to May 1975 at least 456,365 cluster bombs were dropped on Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. And since not all of the bombs actually exploded, the governments of these countries are working with the U.S. to examine the database in order to prevent civilian accidents and deaths.

Overall, Robertson says he is still combing through more than a million records from Vietnam alone.

The database is being used in ongoing conflicts as well. Bombing records are being used to investigate civilian deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq.

And Robertson's efforts may even help bring closure to the cases of missing soldiers, as the military examines the records and cross-references them with reports from pilots and air crews who went missing during battle.

"This collection contains a great trove of information that has greatly accelerated our research," Chris McDermott, chief historian of the Joint Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command, tells the Globe. "Many of the cases where we have success are in far-flung locations with hazy loss circumstances. Each clue that we can compile from the official records could be the key that assists our team to locate a site.''

(AP) ? James Holmes appeared just as dazed as he did in his first court hearing after the deadly Colorado movie theater massacre.

Holmes, 24, sat silently in a packed Denver-area courtroom on Monday, as a judge told him about the charges filed against him, including murder and attempted murder, in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history.

After the charges were read, prosecutors and defense attorneys sparred over whether a notebook that news reports said Holmes sent to his psychiatrist and had descriptions of the attack was privileged information.

It's an argument that foreshadows one of the case's most fundamental issues: Does Holmes have a mental illness and, if so, what role did it play in the shooting that left 12 people dead and 58 others injured?

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he added, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

In all, prosecutors charged Holmes with 142 counts in the shooting rampage at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie.

Holmes faces two first-degree murder charges for each of the 12 people killed and two attempted first-degree murder charges for every one of the 58 injured in the July 20 shooting.

The maximum penalty for a first-degree murder conviction is death. The multiple charges expand the opportunities for prosecutors to obtain convictions.

"It's a much easier way for the prosecution to obtain a conviction," said Denver defense attorney Peter Hedeen. "They throw as many (charges) up as they can. If you think you can prove it three different ways, you charge it three different ways."

Unlike Holmes' first court appearance July 23, Monday's hearing was not televised. At the request of the defense, District Chief Judge William Sylvester barred video and still cameras from the courtroom, saying expanded coverage could interfere with Holmes' right to a fair trial.

A shackled Holmes did not react as the charges were read. At one point, Holmes, his hair still dyed orange-red, leaned over to speak with one of his lawyers and furrowed his brow. When the judge asked him if he was OK with postponing a hearing so his team could have time to prepare, he said softly: "Yeah."

Some court spectators Monday wore Batman T-shirts. Several people clasped their hands and bowed their heads as if in prayer before the hearing. At least one victim attended, and she was in a wheelchair and had bandages on her leg and arm.

Jessica Watts, whose cousin Jonathan Blunk was killed in the shootings, said in a written statement that she believes in the justice system. "He will be held accountable for his actions and we, Jonny's family, will continue to mourn the hole we now have in our lives," she said.

For the murder charges, one count included murder with deliberation, the other murder with extreme indifference. Both counts carry a maximum death penalty upon conviction; the minimum is life without parole.

In addition, Holmes was charged with one count of possession of explosives and one count of a crime of violence. Authorities said Holmes booby trapped his apartment with the intent to kill any officers responding there the night of the attack.

A conviction under the crime of violence charge means that any sentence, including life terms, would have to be served consecutively, not concurrently, said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver.

That ensures that if laws change in the future, the person convicted would still serve a lengthy sentence, Silverman said.

Analysts expect the case to be dominated by arguments over the defendant's sanity.

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, which is the argument offered by lawyers for Jared Loughner, who is accused of killing six people in 2011 in Tucson, Ariz., and wounding several others, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

If Holmes goes to trial and is convicted, his attorneys can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill.

Prosecutors will decide whether to seek the death penalty in the coming weeks.

Defense attorney Tamara Brady said Monday she will subpoena University of Colorado, Denver, psychiatrist Lynne Fenton, whom Holmes had been seeing, to testify in a dispute over whether the notebook is privileged because of a possible doctor-patient relationship.

Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers disputed news reports that the notebook contained descriptions of an attack.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing Fenton. They did not say how long or if it was for a mental illness or another problem. An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of Fenon's research interests.

Holmes' public defenders want to know who leaked the information to the news media. Prosecutors say the notebook was inside a package Holmes reportedly sent to Fenton at the university. Holmes came to the school's competitive neuroscience doctoral program in June 2011 and dropped out a year later.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, in the mailroom of the medical campus where Holmes studied. A hearing on the matter was set for Aug. 16.

Sylvester set an Aug. 9 hearing on news organizations' motion seeking to unseal the case docket.

Sylvester has tried to tightly control the flow of information about Holmes, placing a gag order on lawyers and law enforcement, sealing the court file and barring the university from releasing public records relating to Holmes' year there.

Tom Sullivan's 'major legacy' is a new building for the union on Peck Slip in Manhattan, said the union's vice president, Louis Turco.

TOM SULLIVAN, a longtime cop and president of the union representing the NYPD?s lieutenants, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

Sullivan, 60, of Marine Park, Brooklyn, was a cop for 38 years.

He served as president of the Lieutenants Benevolent Association the last four years.

?Thomas Sullivan served the public as a police officer and his membership as a leader, and he will be remembered for excelling in carrying out both duties,? said NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Two weeks ago, union officials purchased a new building on Peck Slip in Manhattan to serve as a new headquarters.

?That?s a major legacy for him,? said Louis Turco, vice president of the Lieutenants Benevolent Association.

?He was probably the most caring and thoughtful guy I?ve ever been around,? Turco added.

?He always put other people first. He put his family first, he put the union first, he put the department first.?

Sullivan leaves behind his wife, Marie, and five children.

The Gray Report: Taste What You're Missing: Taste science gets girly

Welcome a new type of reader: geeky girls who want to know more about food.

Every one of those three points is important in understanding the target audience of "Taste What You're Missing," an intelligent yet girly book about the science of taste.

And the more I think about a book written for that audience, the happier I am.

San Francisco-based author Barb Stuckey has the professional credentials to explain why a little bitterness makes food more complex, and why acidity helps drinks carry more sugar. She is a professional food developer for a company that consults on frozen and processed foods, trying to make them palatable. That's a lot harder than making a nice dish of pasta salad for four, and requires a lot more thought about what ingredients might work in a recipe.

While written for consumers, not scientists, the book has plenty of interesting science and some good historical research as well. Stuckey points out that sugar consumption skyrocketed in the US following Prohibition, and that the amount of alcohol you drink and the amount of sugar you eat are inversely correlated.

But I've never been more aware of the gender of a scientific/historical book author. She really loves her fiance. Really loves him. Like, a lot. And tells us. A lot.

And yet, that's what makes the book interesting in a meta sense. You can learn a lot about taste from this book. She puts in lots of simple experiments, so you can, for example, differentiate between "bitter" and "sour," or learn to separate taste from smell. You can satisfy your intellectual curiosity, and you can also gain the sort of practical knowledge that she puts to work at her day job. There's something missing from this stew. What will fix it? Lemon juice (sour)? Salt (a great fixer)? Sugar? Maybe some umami (like anchovies)?

I'm a little stunned that such a sophisticated and specific author has an everyday drinking wine: a "white blend from Oregon that retails for $16 a bottle," which she doesn't further identify. Me, I can't drink the same thing every day any more than I could eat the same thing every day. Stuckey writes, "Anything more expensive than ($25 to $40) is lost on me. I just don't experience the incremental benefit." It's depressing that an entire book about taste -- one which extols several restaurants with tasting menus well over $100 -- can say essentially that all wines over $40, they're all not only the same, but they're all a waste of money. I don't understand why even sophisticated diners have this fear of wine, but they do.

But wine is just a tiny part of this book, which is much smarter about food. Stuckey's personal, emotionally involved style, such as holding a party where she make guests taste the same food before and after getting stoned, makes the science go down easy. I got tired of hearing about the fiance and his amazingness, but ultimately I enjoyed the book.

Yet I get the sense I'm not the target audience at all. Stuckey is writing for women: intelligent, scientifically curious women. She's not dumbing anything down, as unfortunately is the case in so much food and wine writing for women. ("Hey girls, don't worry about this fancy stuff like terroir, just find a brand you like and stick with it!") I want to hang out with the women who would read and enjoy this book. We can talk about whether or not fat should be considered the sixth taste. And whether this shirt makes me look fat.

"Hobbit" movie adaptation to be a trilogy

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Peter Jackson's film adaptation of "The Hobbit" will be split into three movies, the director and the studios behind the venture said on Monday.

Jackson said that given the richness of the story -- which is set 60 years before "The Lord of The Rings" -- he decided after wrapping up shooting recently in New Zealand that what was originally planned as two movies would now be a trilogy.

"I'm delighted that New Line, MGM and Warner Bros. are equally enthusiastic about bringing fans this expansive tale across three films," Jackson said in a statement.

"It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, 'a tale that grew in the telling'," Jackson said in a statement on his Facebook site.

"The Hobbit," written by J.R.R. Tolkien, is the prequel to the British author's epic fantasy "The Lord of the Rings," which Jackson made into three Oscar-winning films about 10 years ago.

A spokesman for New Line said the third "Hobbit" film would be released in the summer of 2014. The first two "Hobbit" movies, starring British actor Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, have already been announced for release in December 2012 and December 2013.

"It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made," Jackson said on his Facebook page.

"We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance," he added.

HBT: Greinke strong, but loses Angels debut

Without the injured Mike Trout at the top of the lineup, the Angels got nothing going offensively Sunday ?and took a 2-0 loss to the Rays in Zack Greinke?s debut.

Greinke, who was acquired from the Brewers on Friday, was strong in striking out eight over seven innings, but Jeremy Hellickson was better, blanking the Angels on two hits over six innings. Kyle Farnsworth, Joel Peralta and Fernando Rodney ? the last two former Angels ? finished the Rays? second shutout in two days.

The loss was Greinke?s first in a home start since July 31, 2010, when he was still a member of the Royals. He went 15-0 during his 23 starts at Miller Park as a member of the Brewers.

Greinke allowed both Rays runs after pitching scoreless ball for five innings. The Rays led off the sixth and seventh innings with doubles and scored one run each time. The second run came on a wild pitch.

Greinke has now gone six straight starts without a win. He?ll miss the four-game showdown in Texas this week and make his next start against the White Sox on Friday. That could work out for him; he had his best start of the year against the White Sox in interleague play, pitching nine scoreless innings back on June 22.

Giving Should Exceed Saving? | Evolving Personal Finance

My church put on a financial boot camp this past weekend, the content of which largely followed Dave Ramsey?s baby steps, along with additional Biblical support for a debt-free generous lifestyle and some fun mathematical examples of the power of compound interest.? But one of the volunteers mentioned a principle that he and his wife live by: his savings rate does not exceed his giving rate.

?

I admit that I was surprised to hear this come out of a financial professional?s mouth, even speaking in the context of a ministry volunteer.? I had never heard or read this suggestion through years of absorbing personal finance media and several studies of what the Bible says about money.

?

However, it was something I had wondered about myself.? We tithe and give offerings, but the total percentage of our income that we give is about five points less than what we save for retirement.? Does this make us guilty of ?storing up for [our]selves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal? (Matthew 6:19)?

?

One reframing quote that I heard during the workshop that I appreciated was that ?giving? should be thought of as ?investing in the kingdom of God.?? In that sense, we are investing more in our earthly treasures than we are in God?s kingdom. ?Is the action of investing that extra 5% for our long-term future different in some way than spending it in the now, in terms of comparing it to our giving rate?

?

We don?t have any plans to greatly alter our long-term savings or giving rates, but this session definitely gave me something to think about in terms of a method of evaluating our priorities.

?

Have you ever heard the suggestion to give more than you save?? Which do you do at a higher rate, and which is accelerating faster? ?For those of you who don?t give close to 10%, does this sound crazy?

?

Talk on stolen Caravaggio resurfaces

A new book on Palermo's stolen Caravaggio reignites an old debate on art, the Mafia, and the inefficiency of Italian authorities.

By Alberto Mucci,?Guest blogger / July 16, 2012

It?s a question experts, academics, or simply art?aficionados?have been asking themselves for the last 40 years: Where is Caravaggio's?"Nativity?with St. Francis and St. Lawrence?" After decades of investigation still nobody knows.

The only certainty Italian authorities have, is that the late Caravaggio masterpiece was stolen on the night of October 17, 1969. It had been resting untouched for 360 years?in the Church of San Lorenzo in Palermo, Sicily. Valued at around $30 million, it tops the police's most wanted art object list.

After a time of relative silence the debate has sprung up again. Luca Scarlini, author of the recently published "The Stolen Caravaggio:?Myth and story of a robbery" went deep to untangle the story, read piles of police proceedings, and talked to a plethora of experts to make sense of the scattered information that "repentant" Mafiosi have given authorities over the decades.

Confessions greatly differ from one another. In 2008, former Mafia leader?Gaspare Spatuzza?told the Palermo police that the painting, temporarily hid in a barn, was damaged by rats and afterwards burned. Another Cosa Nostra boss, Salvatore Cancemi, confessed that every time the heads of the Mafia gather, Caravaggio's??Nativity??is showcased so that the bosses can?remind themselves of their power?in relation to that of the Italian state.

"None of these claims have ever been demonstrated," says Vincenzo Bilardello, art history professor at Sapienza University in Rome. Mr. Scarlini agrees. "All this confusion is wanted by the Mafia. It's called a 'trial trick.? Every time a Mafioso stands on trial he has the possibility to play the Caravaggio card and try to strike a deal with the police.?

Despite its grim history the story could end on a positive note. After 10 years most crimes cease to be punishable, according to Italian law, rendering the painting's rediscovery more likely since the 1980s. "It's possible??The Nativity??will show up somewhere unexpected," the author says. "It happened last April with a Cezanne painting, too, so who says it can't happen again?"

Former Duke Archer Wins Silver Medal in London

Former James Madison archer Jacob Wukie (Oak Harbor, Ohio) helped lead the United States archery team to a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, Saturday, July 28, the first of the games for the country. This was the first medal for Wukie and the U.S. picked up a medal after not medaling in the event the past 12 years, dating back to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The American squad of Wukie, current world No. 1 Brady Ellison and Jake Kaminski were in a quarterfinal battle with Japan, as the fourth-seeded U.S. escaped with a one-point victory on the 24-arrow match, 220-219. The U.S. rallied in the final round of six arrows after trailing by one, outscoring Japan by two at 55-53 to advance to the semifinals

In the semifinals, the U.S. took on top-seeded South Korea, who was the three-time defending Olympic champions and had set a new world record for team ranking round yesterday. The Americans trailed by two after the first six arrows, one after 12 arrows and led by one through 18 arrows. In the final six arrows, the U.S. pulled away, hitting five 10-point shots as compared to just one for the South Koreans to outscore the top seed 59-55 and take the 224-219 victory.

Guaranteed a medal, the Italians were the foe in the gold medal match. The U.S. started slow, giving up two-point advantages in the first two rounds to trail 110-106 through 12 arrows. The Americans rallied to cut the margin to two after the next six arrows but couldn't come all the way back, putting up 55 points in the final six arrows, while Italy had 54 and held on for the 219-218 victory.

South Korea earned the bronze medal with a 224-219 victory over Mexico.

Individually, Wukie is slated to take on Jayanta Talukdar of India in the round of 64 on July 30 and August 1, with the winner advancing on those same days. Wukie and Talukdar actually shot together on the same target during the ranking round. The remaining rounds, including the medal matches, will be held on Friday, August 3. Following the completion of the rankings round, the competition goes to a 64-person bracket, with the top seed taking on the No. 64 seed and so on through the bracket.

The Benefits of Hiring an N1 Pest Control Expert - IdeaMarketers.com

Summary: Pest control chemical sprays available on the market are only effective on small pest infestations. If huge infestation happens, the best way to solve the problem is to hire an N1 pest control company. Pest control Islington experts can help you solve serious pest infestation problems, including those caused by wasps, mice and rats.

Body: For a simple pest infestation, it's probably wise to do pest control and removal all by yourself. But when pests have multiplied and the infestation has grown serious, hiring a pest control company is certainly the smartest thing to do. In Islington, there are several N1 pest control companies specializing in pest eradication, from rodents to insects, to fleas and bed bugs.

One of the biggest benefits of hiring N1 pest control experts is the fact that these individuals have long years of experience and knowledge in the industry, plus the fact that they employ the most up-to-date methods and tools. State-of-the-art equipment and techniques ensure that pests are completely eradicated and will never invade your home again.

Often, chemical sprays that are sold in the market may be effective only on small infestations and may not last long. Experts, on the other hand, are equipped with high-end pesticides that are not available in the market, and that can eradicate huge infestations. Moreover, only these experts may have the knowledge and skills to properly and safely use these dangerous products. Pesticides are considered harmful to human health, and having an N1 pest control professional handle pest infestation for you can sure save you trouble.

Aside from chemical sprays, service providers may also use mechanical methods, such as the use of traps and baits, as well as dust applicators, fumigators, fogging equipment and other state-of-the-art equipment you probably may not have seen or heard of, and that only these companies have access to.

Another advantage of hiring experts is the fact that these individuals are equipped with the ability to detect pests not just those that you have seen and sited, but also those that you may not be aware are still lurking behind your walls and ceilings. Experts also provide you advice so you can prevent future infestations. N1 pest control companies also ensure they employ the best approach to eradicating pests. They do home evaluations to identify the type of pests, their locations and how serious the infestation is. Through the process, experts will be able to come up with not just the best way to approach the problem, but also one that you are convenient with.

Pest infestation is one of the most challenging problems that homeowners often encounter at their premises. And while a do-it-yourself pest control and removal can save you bucks, hiring an expert remains the key to completely eradicating these unwanted organisms and preventing them from coming back. It is not something to hesitate about because of the expensive fees, but rather something that is worth spending your money on. After all, you are sure to reap huge benefits after the service, including keeping your family safe all the time.

If you are in Islington or around its vicinity, there are a lot of pest control companies to choose from. You just need to ensure you are dealing with a good and reliable Islington pest control company -- that is, a company that is recognized by the authorities, and one that has years of experience and knowledge in the industry.

Catholic schools see marketing aid enrollment

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? After 97 years, Our Lady of Lourdes School was closing ? enrollment had dwindled to just 35 children last year at what was once one of the West Coast's biggest Catholic schools.

But with a new principal who knocked on doors, offered X Box video game consoles to kids who brought in a friend, and recruited families who lost their bid in a charter school lottery, the East Los Angeles school stayed open ? 132 pupils are registered for this fall.

Call it educational evangelism. Roman Catholic schools are seeing years of marketing efforts starting to pay off in spite of tough competition from charter schools and the lingering effects of a devastating recession.

After seeing years of relentless enrollment decline, several key dioceses across the nation saw students trickle back to their schools over the past year. They say it comes down to a cultural change in Catholic education that has taken a while to implement but is finally taking root.

"If we want to continue to survive, we have to think like a business," said Domenico Pilato, who heads the Archdiocese of Los Angeles' school marketing project.

Nationally, Catholic school enrollment is still waning ? closing 167 schools and losing 34,000 pupils over the past year. But educators say the number of schools with waiting lists increased by 171 and 34 schools opened.

The archdioceses of Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago, which have all employed aggressive marketing programs, have seen student upticks, offering hope the exodus can be turned around on a larger scale.

In Los Angeles, where enrollment had plummeted by more than 2,000 students a year for the past decade, elementary enrollment increased by 300 students last year. In Boston, the decline slowed to a 20-year low of 1 percent. Chicago, the nation's largest diocesan school system, saw city elementary enrollment increase by 8 percent.

Smaller dioceses also report gains. In Lafayette, Ind., where two schools closed in 2009, 300 new kids enrolled and plans are afoot to open an elementary school. Bridgeport, Conn., reported a 5 percent enrollment jump.

"Catholic schools are beginning to market and promote themselves," said Shane Martin, dean of education at Loyola Marymount University. "It's really about getting the word out about this option. People don't know much about it."

Schools realized the need to start marketing more aggressively some years ago, but it's been a slow shift in a conservative environment that historically never had to advertise itself.

In Los Angeles, some high school principals reluctant to take on marketing duties had to be replaced, said Monsignor Sabato Pilato, superintendent of high schools, who is Domenico's brother.

"Something different had to happen," the monsignor said.

Margaret Dames, superintendent of Bridgeport's Catholic schools, said she went through a personal learning curve. "I wasn't used to marketing," she said. "We're getting better at it."

It's a far cry from the 1960s when Catholic families flocked to parochial schools staffed mainly by priests and nuns, who earned a pittance and were renowned for wielding rulers to rap knuckles and check skirt length. Catholic school enrollment hit a high of 5.2 million in 13,000 schools during that decade.

These days, enrollment stands around 2 million in 6,800 schools that cost more to run. With religious vocations attracting few entrants, lay teachers staff 97 percent of classrooms and schools must cope with payroll, pensions and health insurance.

In more recent years, charter schools, which are autonomous publicly funded schools, have also siphoned off students in urban neighborhoods where Catholic schools once catered to European immigrants and then carved out a niche with minority pupils. Some charters even adopt uniforms resembling parochial plaids.

The rise of charters, in turn, has caused public schools to get more competitive with specialties such as magnets, small learning communities, performing arts and language programs.

"Charter schools have affected traditional public schools and private schools, particularly Catholic schools," Martin said. "There's more competition and choice than ever before."

Sister Mary Paul McCaughey, schools superintendent of the Archdiocese of Chicago, pointed to charters' main advantage over her schools: "The attraction is clearly the freebie."

Catholic school tuition averages $3,700 for elementary grades, and $8,100 for secondary, although many students receive financial aid and fees only pay for about 75 percent of costs. The tab is rounded out by the church and donations.

But Catholic educators say their philosophy of coupling solid academics with moral values yields superior results: 99 percent of students graduate and 85 percent go to college, according to the National Catholic Educational Association. The challenge has been touting those accomplishments in a tradition that values humility.

"Catholic schools have been reluctant to tell their story. It seems like boasting," said Karen Ristau, association president. "We're not particularly boasters."

That's changing. Schools have formed volunteer marketing committees, with some like Chicago and Bridgeport paying $2,500 stipends to parents who take on formal duties.

Los Angeles has one of the more sophisticated programs, which Pilato launched at the behest of his brother, who became alarmed when secondary enrollment sagged by 750 students in 2008.

Domenico Pilato, who had worked in city government outreach projects, organized each archdiocese high school to appoint a parent volunteer team to develop a marketing plan and taught them how to do it.

Now, those schools are required to employ a fulltime marketing director, employees undergo training in everything from social media to customer service, and the initiative has expanded to elementary schools.

Schools sponsor socials with preschool directors, real estate agents, and Spanish-speaking parents, and partner with youth organizations like the Boys & Girls Club and Little Leagues to host events. Kids in catechism classes get a spring break camp at a Catholic school, while parents who bring babies for baptism get a flood of information.

To compete academically, schools offer new programs with iPads, Mandarin Chinese and even a film and media school in Hollywood, as well as a 200-day school year. Most public schools have 180 days

"This is the first year we have not closed a school," said Kevin Baxter, Archodiocese of Los Angeles elementary superintendent. "People are seeing the value."

Still, schools in other places are struggling. In San Diego, where two schools have closed in as many years, Our Lady's School hovers on the brink. The school has 273 pre K-8 students, but most are low-income and cannot pay full tuition.

School President Noel Bishop tried coupons on the back of supermarket receipts. A teacher wore a sandwich-board to advertise an open house. The Virgin of Guadalupe was even incorporated in the school logo to appeal to Mexican-Americans. But the efforts, plus donations and a diocese emergency loan, have not closed the gap.

"We're trying to be forward thinking but we've seen a lot of families lose their jobs," he said.

At Our Lady of Lourdes in East Los Angeles, which back in the 1940s schooled 1,000 pupils, Principal Cori Marasco's latest hook to reel in more pre K-8 students is turning an auditorium into an indoor basketball court, paid for by foundation donations. It's part of her plan to make the school a community center in the impoverished, gang-plagued neighborhood.

"The park is known for drive-by shootings so kids don't have a place to go," she said. "They can come here ? and enroll in school, too."

(AP) ? Mitt Romney says that if he paid more taxes than were required, he wouldn't be qualified to be president.

The U.S. presidential candidate tells ABC News that American voters expect candidates to pay "only what the tax code requires." He says he hasn't calculated what percentage of his income was paid in taxes but says that he's been audited.

Romney's vast personal wealth has been an issue in the campaign.

Democrats have criticized him for paying only 13.9 percent of his income in taxes during the one year his taxes have been made public.

Romney says he will release an additional year of returns before Election Day. That has left some questioning whether Romney pays a smaller share than other Americans.

Bear Risk Management | Sustainable Business Forum

My lovely wife wants to take me camping next weekend. I?ve never been camping but understand camping was a part of her life before we met. I?ve explained that I am not averse to camping despite the dirt, cold, sleeping on the ground, canned beans,?raccoons, no wifi, poison ivy, bugs and bears. But am quite looking forward to it!

While looking for camp sites in central Ontario, Killbear Provincial Park seemed like the choice. With a name that includes the verb ?kill? and the noun ?bear? I imagine it must be safe! She began doing some research on tripadvisor.com and found the following comments from a few weeks ago.

The park and the water are outstanding, we would love to come back any time, but a threatening bear encounter will make us think twice.

I had my car lights spraying the site and direction of where the Bear was as we were tearing down we were loading the trunk ? I then heard a thud and crack and turned to see the Black Bear with its head in my trunk trying to get into the car?

?We had a bear snuffing and growling right outside of our tent and stamping its paws so hard the ground trembled. We left shortly after, and stayed at a hotel for the first night.

Immediately after reading these comments my beautiful wife decided against Killbear because the Bear Risk was too great. But is there more risk than other nearby site we were considering?

Being the risk manager that I am I was curious if the Bear Risk at Killbear was as ?extremely likely? as she would believe from these comments and did a quick assessment:

According to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources ?Since the early 1900s there have been fewer than 70 deaths in North American as a result of black bears?. ( I guess it only said ?killed?, there was no mention of how many people were de-gloved by bears.)

The same ministry provides a map to illustrate the density of bears in parts of Ontario. Killbear, and all the other sites we were looking at north of Toronto are located in the brown shaded area. Conclusion: Killbear should have the same number of bears as all the other sites so why not go there anyway!

Although we will do proper bear risk management when we camp like hide our food and clean up at night there is always a possibility there will be a bear. People do this all the time by assessing a risk based on limited information (see comments above) or emotion.

I say that if we jump to the?conclusion that bears will attack us next weekend just because people saw bears a few weeks ago, THEN THE BEARS WIN.

Assess your risks carefully and manage them accordingly.
